He died of pneumonia. 03/04/1897 - Thursday - Mrs. John PLETCHER died at five o'clock this morning at her late home six miles east of Goshen of pneumonia. She was the wife of the young man who lost his hand some weeks ago by the accidental discharge of his gun while hunting and they had been married but a few months. 02/28/1899 - Tuesday, Mrs. John PLETCHER, aged 70, died at her home in Olive Township, four miles north of Wakarusa at noon today of paralysis. She leaves a husband and a number of grown children. Undertaker Culp received a telephone message at three o'clock and drove to her house. He is not acquainted with the funeral arrangements. 03/01/1899 - Mrs. John PLETCHER, aged 70 years, died at her home in Olive Tp yesterday noon from paralysis in the clutches of which she had lingered about six weeks. She leaves a husband and 10 children all of this county. The funeral will occur Friday from the Baugo Church in Olive Tp. 03/01/1899 - Mrs. Christiana PLETCHER whose death of paralysis was mentioned in Tuesday News was aged 70 years. She leaves a husband and ten children. The funeral will take place Friday at 11 o'clock from the Baugo Church in Olive Township. 12/30/1899 - PIONEER DIES IN HIS CHAIR - Demise of John PLETCHER comes Without Warning - Deceased was 75 Years of Age - Rocking a Grandchild to Sleep When he Answered the Final Summons - Had Not Complained of Feeling Ill - John PLETCHER, aged about 75 years, one of the oldest and best known residents in the southwestern part of the county, died very suddenly between 10 and 11 o'clock yesterday morning at his home 4 miles northeast of Wakarusa. Mr. PLETCHER was apparently in his usual health in the morning and after breakfast went to the stable to do his customary chores. He then returned to the house and was rocking his grandchild in a cradle when Mrs. Frank PLETCHER, his daughter-in-law, with whom he resided, thought that she noticed something peculiar about the old gentleman. She approached him and asked what was wrong, but received no response. Five minutes later the last spark of life had gone out and Mr. PLETCHER died without uttering a word or showing any evidence of pain. He had not complained of feeling sick and had been in unusually good health. A doctor was called in but an examination revealed the fact that nothing could be done as the body was already cold in death. Deceased leaves five sons and four daughters. Mrs. PLETCHER died about nine months ago. Coroner Eisenbeiss is today holding an inquest over the remains. It is supposed that heart disease was the cause of the demise. Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 10 o'clock from the Olive church leaving the house at shortly before that hour. 07/13/1900 - Edna Grace PLETCHER, age 15 years, d/o Christian PLETCHER died at seven o'clock this morning at the home of Mr and Mrs. James HORN in Clinton township, where she has resided for several years. Her death is a complication of diseases. Funeral will occur on Sunday afternoon at two o'clock from the Rock Run Church. Rev. William Pearce, of this city officiating. 09/05/1900 - Magdalena HIBSCHMAN, aged 80 years, died at 3 o'clock this morning of old age, at her home in Harrison twp, 8 miles west of Goshen. She leaves three children, Henry, who resides on the homestead, Mrs. Joseph GRABRICH of Elkhart and Mrs. Milton MISHLER of Goshen. Burial in Grace Lawn. 07/22/1902 - Warren SCOTT, aged 17 years, son of Lafayette SCOTT, residing seven miles east of Goshen on the Fish Lake Road, died of typhoid fever yesterday afternoon at three o'clock. He had been ill several weeks. Deceased was graduated from the district schools this spring and was well liked by his fellow students. The deceased leaves two sons, John and Noah and one daughter, Elizabeth PLETCHER. The funeral will be held Sunday at 10 a.m. 08/11/1905 - Friday - Franklin PLETCHER, 45 years of age and a well known farmer of Olive township died at his home in Wakarusa at 5 o'clock this morning after a lingering illness from consumption. Beside his wife, 5 children survive, 2 sons and 3 daughters. The funeral will occur from the Christian Church in Wakarusa Sunday morning at 10. 09/08/1905 - Friday - Mrs. Catherine CLIPP, widow of the late Conrad CLIPP, died this morning at 7 o'clock at her home eight miles west of the city in Harrison township, after a long illness of a complication of diseases. She is survived by three sons Andrew, Jacob and Samuel CLIPP, one daughter Mrs. Levi CAINON and 21 grand-children. She was 70 years of age and had lived in this county over 50 years. Funeral services will be Sunday at 11 at Olive Center Church. Interment in Cemetery at Olive Center. Services by Rev. Mr. Yoder. 01/29/1909 - Friday - DIED FROM SHOCK - Israel PLETCHER, living seven miles west of Goshen, died Thursday night from the shock resulting from closure of the bowels. He was taken sick Sunday night. Mr. PLETCHER was 37 years of age and is survived by his wife and four children. He leaves his wife, three little sons, his parents, Mr and Mrs. Henry PLETCHER, five sisters and three brothers. He is survived by his parents and two brothers, Harold and Lloyd. 03/21/1919 - John A PLETCHER of Elkhart, age 74, a well known resident of this county for over 40 years died yesterday at his home of a complication of diseases after an illness of 10 days. A son, Corporal Tarquin PLETCHER is a member of the American Expeditionary Forces and has not been heard from for over a month. She was born in PA in 1807 and married in 1830. In 1836 she and her husband and three children moved from Center Co PA to Crawford Co PA and the next year to Richland Co OH where she had her home till her death. They both united with the Mennonite church the same year they were married. She had 10 children - 5 of which preceded her to the spirit world. During the latter years of her life she felt great concern for the spiritual welfare of her children yet living. She shed many tears for them, prayed continually for them, and conversed much with them of the necessity of giving their hearts to God. Many times she was found in her closet praying for her children that they might be saved before she died...Through her 14 years of suffering she bore her sickness patiently. YODER; Burial Gracelawn Cemetery, Elkhart. 38:14 11/28/1900 - Deacon John NUSBAUM died 28 Nov 1900 at home 2 1/2 miles south and 3/4 mile east of Middlebury where he lived since April 1873. When but a boy he moved with his father from Ashland Co OH to Richland Co OH, his mother having died a short time before. While living in this county, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth FREED and in autumn of 1860 they moved with his father to IN 3 and 1/2 miles SE of Middlebury. Here he lived about 3 years, cleared about 20 acres of small timbered land, built a barn which still stands. In spring of 1864, he moved to Lagrange Co IN on a farm of 70 acres where in addition to farming he successfully operated for 12 years or more a threshing machine in company with H C PROUGH. In the summer of 1869 his family passed through a siege of typhoid fever in which 7 were sick, two and three at a time and from which his wife never fully recovered. During all these years they were faithful members of the Mennonite church, which they attended regularly. In Feb 1873 his wife after a long and patient illness went to her celestial home; a dau only 2 years old preceded her about three weeks. Thus left with 7 children he moved in April to Elkhart Co on the farm where he lived until he passed from labor to rest. He built on this farm a house and a large bank barn which stand to this day. Abt 20 years ago he was ordained a deacon in the duties of which office he was very conscientious and faithful to the last. Middlebury Independent Middlebury, Elkhart Co., IN 03/18/1910 - Mrs Susan SCOTT PLANK died Sat. evening at 8 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Barbara SCHROCK on South Main St, Middlebury at age of nearly 84 years. Her death resulted from an accident which occurred over six weeks ago when the deceased fell and fractured her hip. She was widow of the late Christian PLANK. She was born in Richland Co, 11 May 1826 and at the time of her death was 83-10-1. She leaves 7 children while three have preceded her to the spirit world. NUSBAUM and Simon GRINER called - Both Well Known - Death called two residents of this vicinity Saturday when Newton I NUSBAUM, for a number of years a patient sufferer from tuberculosis, and Simon GRINER, answered the last summons. Newton Isaac NUSBAUM was the son of Mr and Mrs John NUSBAUM and was born 10 Oct 1880, on the old homestead southeast of Middlebury. He had lived in this community all his life. About 13 years ago he united with the Griner Lutheran Church. 10 Jun 1903 he united in marriage to Miss Lula PENCE. To this union were born five children of whom four, Chester, Ralph, Mable and William, together with their mother, survive. Two brothers, Frank of south of town and Daniel of Vistula and one sister, Mrs. John BEACHY; four half brothers, John of Oscodo MI; David of Jackson, Minn; Lee of Storm Lake Iowa and J F of this place; and three half sisters, Mrs. Henry SNYDER of Jackson, Minn, and Mrs Frank GARDNER and Mrs. J C HERSHBERGER of Middlebury. He was superintendent of Griner Sunday School for a number of years and at the time of his death was a member of the church council. Burial in Forest Grove Cemetery. 08/07/1914 - Prominent Citizen Dead - Henry H NUSBAUM, aged 75 years, and a resident of Middlebury twp for many years, died at his home in Middlebury, Monday at noon of heart trouble. Mr. NUSBAUM was born in Ashland County OH and is survived by his wife, two sons, Harrison of Detroit and J E of Chicago and two daughters, Mrs. C E KAUFFMAN of this place and Leona at home. 08/14/1914 - Henry H NUSBAUM, was born in Ashland County OH, 27 December 1838 and died at his home in Middlebury, 3 Aug 1914 at the age of 75 years, 7 months and 7 days. He was son of John NUSBAUM who was a native of Switzerland and came to America in 1818 when he was 18 years of age. Henry was one of a family of 15 children. Four brothers and four sisters are living. He was educated at Hayesville College. When he was a young man he came to Indiana where he engaged in the teaching profession for ten years after which he took up farming. In 1862 he was married to Mary Jane WERT. To them were born four children, Harrison of Detroit, John Edward of Chicago, and Mrs. C E KAUFFMAN and Leona of Middlebury. Sixteen years ago he and his family moved to Middlebury where they have resided since. More than six years ago his health began to fail. His father was Mennonite minister. More than 17 years ago he united with Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church. When his Lord came he was standing on the watch tower waiting. He fell asleep peacefully in Christ. Death was not unexpected nor yet unwelcome. 01/01/1915 - Samuel NUSBAUM Answers Last Call - After an illness extending over a period of several months, Samuel NUSBAUM, one of the best known residents of the county and a resident of Middlebury and vicinity, died at the home of his son-in-law, A L TROYER, Christmas Day. Born in Ashland Co OH, 12 Aug 1837 and moving to this county in 1850, the life of Mr NUSBAUM has been filled with joy and sorrow. From one of the pioneers of the county, he rose to the position of a well to do farmer and a citizen well spoken of by all who knew him. Honest in his dealings with his fellow man, a friend in time of need, and a Christian of the pioneer type was Mr. NUSBAUM. On 13 Mar 1861, he was married to Catherine WORT and to this union were born three daughters and two sons, all of whom survive. Besides the children, Mrs. S C EASH, Mrs A L TROYER, and Mrs. Clara EASH, O. S. and Samuel NUSBAUM, all of Middlebury; three brothers, William of Pulaski Ia, Christian of Ottawa Kan, Joseph of Peabody Kan; and four sisters Mrs. W W MILLER of Chicago, Mrs Daniel BALYEAT, Mrs. A HAINES and Mrs. Katherine HOOVER of Middlebury survive. Mr. NUSBAUM was one of the pioneer thresherman of the county and followed the business for a number of years. About ten years he moved to Middlebury and had resided here until his death. His wife died several years ago. He was member of Mennonite church. 04/04/1919 - Prominent Middlebury Twp Resident Called by Death - John BEACHY, aged 50 years, died at home two miles south of Middlebury, Wednesday of this week, following an illness of less than a week. Pneumonia was the cause of his death. He was born in Holmes Co OH, 7 Nov 1869, and came to this county in 1873. He was son of the late Joseph BEACHY. Being cared for at county jail until room at state hospital is obtained. 09/27/1905 - Mrs James BEAM, aged 33 years, 1 month and 28 days, died Sept 24th 5 miles north-east of Nappanee. The funeral was held yesterday at the Brick church in which cemetery the interment was made by N. A. Lehman. She leaves a husband and 10 children. The same year they moved to IN which was their home until death called them away. Mother died 13 Apr 1910, aged 79y-3m-6d. To this union were born 13 children. Her husband and 4 children preceded her to the spirit world. Nine children, 39 g-ch, and 10 g-g-ch, one brother and two sisters remain to mourn her departure. She united with the Mennonite church before her marriage and remained a faithful member until her death. In the spring of 1909 she was united with the Mennonite church at Yellow Creek, of which she was a faithful member until death. She was a teacher in the Sunday School a number of years. Also 30 acres of north side of NW quarter of section 14 exclusive of one acre church lot in township 35 north Range 5 east, containing the aggregate 70 acres of land more or less in Elkhart County. 03/04/1920 - Mrs Walter EBY dies of Influenza - Mrs Walter EBY, of six miles north of Wakarusa, died at 7 o'clock Friday evening, a victim of influenza and paralysis. Her death came as a great shock to her relatives and friends for early Friday evening it was thought she was improving. Her husband is also sick in bed suffering from influenza although not seriously ill. Survivors: husband, 4 children - Grace, Edna, Earl and Glenn and her aged father, Peter PLETCHER, who makes his home with the family. The funeral arrangements will not be made until Mr EBY's condition improves. 03/18/1920 - Barbara PLETCHER died Mar 14, 1920 at age 68 in Harrison township. Married to John PLETCHER. Services Thursday at Olive Church. 03/18/1920 - Joseph NUSBAUM - FARMER DIES SUDDENLY WHILE AT WORK IN BARN - Joseph NUSBAUM, 59, Weakened by Influenza, Expires Soon After Complaining of Being Tired - Joseph NUSBAUM, aged 56, living NE of Wakarusa, died suddenly in his barn Sat afternoon of heart failure. Mr NUSBAUM had suffered from influenza this winter and never fully recovered. He is survived by his wife and a daughter, Mrs Elmer PLETCHER of Wakarusa, brother Amos NUSBAUM, and three sisters, Mrs John BILLMAN of near Wakarusa, and Mrs MILLER and Mrs RULE of Goshen. Another daughter, Miss Clara NUSBAUM, aged 27, died last winter. Mr NUSBAUM was working in the barn with a 15 year old boy who lived with him for several years. He complained of feeling tired and sat down. He fainted immediately and the boy tried to lift him and talk to him, but he was already dead. Services were held Wed forenoon at Yellow Creek Dunkard Church, Rev H> M. Schwalm officiating. 09/16/1920 - Elmer PLETCHER died Sep 14, 1920 in Elkhart. Burial Friday at Yellow Creek. 12/27/1920 - Bartholomew RISSER, 86, died Wed night at the RISSER homestead, 4 1/2 miles NE of Wakarusa. His son-in-law and daughter, Mr and Mrs Christ PLETCHER, also shared the home with him. Burial Olive Cemetery. Last of a family of 10 children, born in Germany, s/o Mr and Mrs Henry RISSER, the family came to U.S. when he was three years old, locating first in OH and soon after in Elkhart Co. His brother Christ RISSER died two weeks ago and his wife died last April. Surviving are his wife, Mrs Martha HERSHBERGER, 2 sons, one L. I. HERSHBERGER, lives north of Wakarusa and two daughters.
