James G. Rowley was born in New Albany, Aug. 17, 1824, of parents, Alphus and 
Achsah (Wilson) Rowley, neither of whom are living. He was married in the city 
of his birth, in 1869 to Mary Simms who was born Jan. 20, 1841, in Harrison 
county, Indiana. Her father, John W. Simms born in 1811, is still spared at 
the age of 80 years; her mother, Susan (Holtsclow) Simms is still living, at 
the age of 70 years. Four children were born to them: George L., Harry, 
Blanche and William. Comrade Rowley was a blacksmith by trade when he entered 
the Federal Army, at New Albany, Ind., as Corp., Jan. 24, 1865, in Co. A, 
144th Ind. V.I.  He did not take part in any regular battles as his services 
consisted principally of scouting, skirmishing, general guard and garrison 
duty, mostly in the Shennandoah Valley. He was granted an honorable discharge 
Aug. 5, 1865, at Stevenson Station, Virginia, at the close of the war. His 
wife’s father, John W. Simms served about one year in the Mexican War. Comrade 
Rowley is in receipt of a well-deserved pension and he may be addressed at 
Lanesville, Harrison county, Ind., near which place he is at present engaged 
in farming.

I came across the photocopied pages in a file at the public
library in New Albany. I have never been able to locate an
original copy of the book.
