W. Beckwith (1881) W. E. Baker, attorney, Veedersburg, was born in 1831, near Harper's Ferry, Maryland. In September, 1842, he came with his parents and located in Fountain county. He served an apprenticeship of three years at milling. In 1861 he enlisted as a private in the United States service. Afterward he was elected second lieutenant in Co. H, 2d N. Y. Cav., which office he resigned, and a second time enlisted in Co. C, 154th Ind. Vols., and was discharged at the close of the war. Returning home he entered into the study of law, in 1870, at Covington; was admitted to the bar in Fountain county common pleas court. The subject of this sketch lives in Veedersburg. As an attorney he is considered a man of proficiency, and has a good practice. In politics he is a loyal democrat, and was heard to remark that should the old flag be dishonored, the first thing he would do would be to raise a company to defend that starry emblem of liberty and prosperity.
