W. Beckwith (1881) William Mallett, miller, Stone Bluff, was born in Lawrence county, Indiana, in 1832, and is the son of Silas and Elizabeth Mallett; the former a native of Connecticut, and came to Indiana in an early time, the latter a native of North Carolina. William Mallett was reared a farmer, which he pursued until 1875, when he bought the water-mill known as the Stone Bluff mill, which he still continues to operate. He was married in 1858, to Eliza J. Hawlins, native of Indiana, who died in 1866, leaving four children, Charles, Lizzie, Wallas, and Alvin, to mourn the loss of a kind and affectionate mother. She was also a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. Mr. Mallett is one of the firm republicans in Van Buren township. He began life in meagre circumstances, with a still more meagre common school education. By energy, industry and economy he has succeeded in gaining a good business in both the grist and saw mill, and his work meets with general approval.
