W. Beckwith (1881) Levi Mead, farmer, Covington, has been a resident of Fountain county since 1853. He was born in 1830, just one year after his father, Simeon Mead, settled in Vermilion county, Indiana. His life has been spent principally in the Wabash valley, and his present nice home and good property has been acquired by his own thrift and good management. He began first by working by the month, then rented a farm, and finally was able to buy. His farm now consists of 135 acres, on which he has cleared eighty-five acres and made most of the improvements; he has also built fine buildings. In addition to farming he has a steam saw-mill of a manufacturing capacity of 6,000 feet of lumber per day. Through this enterprise Mr. Mead has helped to build up and improve that part of Troy township in which he lives. In his political views he is a staunch republican. In 1859 Mr. Mead was married to Miss Crain, daughter of Joseph C. and Melinda Crain, who are numbered among Fountain county's early settlers. They have a family of three children, two boys and one girl.
