W. Beckwith (1881) Washington Rice, farmer, Newtown, son of Jonathan N. B. and Narcissus Ann (McCollum) Rice, was born near his present home January 18, 1848. Many years ago his parents left Kentucky and settled in Montgomery county; residing there a considerable time they next moved to Fountain county and improved a farm on Coal creek, being the N. E. 1/4 Sec. 14, T. 20, R. 7. His father lived here till his death, which occurred February 11, 1877. Mr. Rice was married on September 20, 1871, to Susan Stephens, daughter of John Stephens, who settled in Shawnee township as early as 1827. She was born March 12, 1849. Their two children are Minnie, born September 23, 1872; and Ada, October 20, 1874. Mr. Rice owns 120 acres of choice land. He fraternizes with the democrats.
