W. Beckwith (1881) Elias Riley, farmer, Hillsboro, son of William H. and Mary Ann (Mondy) Riley, was born in Richland township, January 10, 1841. He was enrolled in March, 1865, in Co. A, 154th Ind. Vols., to serve one year or during the war, and did provost and garrison duty in the Shenandoah valley until mustered out at Stephenson, Virginia, August 20, 1865. He was disbanded at Indianapolis. He was married to Samantha Short September 23, 1866. She was the daughter of Aaron Short, and was born January 29, 1845, having two children: James Edward, born September 13, 1869; Junietta, January 24, 1872. His second marriage was with Miss Margaret Smith, in October 1875. She was born April 25, 1848. Their issue have been Carrie, born October 4, 1876, and Alfaretta, June 25, 1878. Both parents are members of the Campbellite church. Mr. Riley united in 1867, and Mrs. Riley ten years ago. He has a farm of seventy acres, and is a democrat.
