W. Beckwith (1881) Allen C. Schermerhorn, farmer, Newtown, eldest son of Jacob J. and Martha A. (Odell) Schermerhorn, was born in Richland township, November 9, 1852. He was educated at Stockwell Collegiate Institute, spending nearly three years at that institution. His sister's death occurring just before the end of the year, when he would have graduated in the scientific course, he lacked ten weeks of finishing it, and did not return to receive his degree. He was married September 15, 1875, to Rhoda Unity, daughter of John S. Martin. Both are members of the Methodist church. He has been a Mason six years, and has his membership in Richland Lodge, No. 205. He owns 100 acres of land and his wife 212 acres. In the homestead where they live are 152 acres of choice land. He is an active man in his community, and politically a republican.
