Mrs. Koten, who maintained a summer home on Lake Manitou, is believed to be the first child to be delivered in a hospital in Fulton County. She was born on May 19, 1906 to Alfred G. and Chloe TROUTMAN NEERMAN shortly after the construction of the original Woodlawn hospital, located on the site now occupied by the Fulton County Public Library. She was the granddaughter of the Hoosier poet John E. TROUTMAN, who was also of Rochester. She lived in Indianapolis for 40 years. On May 1, 1927 she married Roy Y. KOTEN, who died Aug. 19, 1976. She was a musician and the author of numerous articles for religious and children’s publications. She was a 1926 graduate of the North Central College School of Music in Naperville, Ill. The Koten Chapel at the college is named in honor of her and her hsband. She was a member of the Lockerbie Square United Methodist Church, Indianapolis. She had served in a variety of offices at the church, including president of the Women’s Society of World Service. She also held leadership positions in the Women’s Society of Christian Church of the Southern Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church. She was active in a number of civic organizations of Irvington, the Irvington Historical Society and the Irvington Union of Clubs. She was a past president of the Irvington Mothers Study Club. She was an accomplished pianist and had accompanied musical groups in Detroit and Indianapolis. She was a member of the Patroness Club of the Zeta Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota, a music sorority, and was active in the Irvington Music Club. Surviving are a daughter, Jane KOTEN, Winnetka, Ill.; a son, John A. [KOTEN], Barrington Hills, Ill.; three grandchildren, John, Mark and Sarah [KOTEN], and four great-grandchildren. Preceding in death was a sister, Mildred HAUMERSEN RIDDLE, on Jan. 24, 1990. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Foster & Good Funeral Home, Rochester, with the Rev. Carl RICKS officiating. Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Rochester. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Tuesday. A memorial service will be held this spring at North Central College in Naperville.
