ANDREW JACKSON WHEELER [1831 -1896] Gibson County, Knox County, Indiana New Madrid County, Missouri Father: Samuel Wheeler Mother: Nancy Key Andrew Jackson Wheeler was born in 1831, the son of Samuel and Nancy Key Wheeler and grandson of James and Elizabeth Welch Wheeler of Buckingham County, Virginia and pioneers of Gibson County, Indiana. He is listed as Jackson on the 1850 Census with his father. Andrew Jackson Wheeler served in the Civil War from October 1861 to January 24, 1864 as private in 58th Indiana Volunteers Co. C Commanded by William A. Downey. He re-enlisted as a veteran and served under Capt. Augusta Milburn, 58th Regiment Indiana, Vet. Company C. He mustered out July 25, 1865 at Loudon County, Tennessee. A "Delclaration for Original Invalid pension" was made, New Madrid County, Missouri on August 3, 1895 at age 64. He stated that he suffered from rheumatism in back legs and shoulder. His pension claim number was 955.786. The following affidavit was given in New Madrid County, Missouri, March 26, 1892: "that he lost his hearing in the heavy cannonading at Chattanooga, Tenn., in the fall of 1863. Source is not due to vicious habits and is of a permnant disability. He further states that the instigation was first caused by the signal cannon of 100# was fired to advance and then kept up by artillary firing until the fight was over, the older I get the worse my hearing gets." March 26, 1892 "I futher declare I never have applied for a pension since 1891. I futher declare, I made application before Dr. Peck of Vincennes, Ind. and do not know his report.
