ALMA WHEELER (1861-1879) Gibson County, Indiana Father: Henry Gibson Wheeler Mother: Mary B. McClure Alma Wheeler died August 14, 1879 Our community was startled, Tues- day, by the report that Miss Alma Wheeler, the beautiful and accomplished daughter of our respected citizen, Henry G. Wheeler, living about 2 miles south of town, had been thrown from a buggy and seriously, and probably fatally injured. Mr. Wheeler had started, Monday, to go over to Pike Co., along the line of the new railroad for the purpose of purchasing timber, and took his daughter along for company. When they arrived at the farm of Henry Brenton, about 4 miles from Peters- burg, Mr. Wheeler left his daughter in the buggy and went up to Mr. Brenton's house to see him about some timber in that vicin- ity. During his absence a flock of geese came up behind the buggy making a great noise, at which the horse took fright and started to run. It seems Miss Wheeler held on to the horse until he had run about a hundred yards when coming to an em- bankment she was thrown out striking her head on the ground with great violence. She was still entangled in the vehicle, and in this condition was dragged a distance of about 50 yards further. When her father reached her she was insensible, and on examination she was found to be very badly cut and bruised about the head and face, and was bleeding profusely from the mouth and ears. She was immediately placed in a conveyance and taken to Pe- tersburg and medical aid summoned. This unfortunate affair occurred about 5 o'clock Monday evening, and at 9 o'clock yester- day morning there was no improvements. There is no hope of her recovery. Miss Wheeler was a young lady held in high esteem by a large circle of acquain- tances about Princeton. She was one of the graduating class of 1878, of Princeton High School, and her sad fate makes a gloom ending of what promised to be a bright and happy life as well a life of use- fulness. ------------------------------------------------------------------ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by : Roy Wheeler (© 1997 Roy Wheeler ) USGENWEB NOTICE: These electronic pages cannot be reproduced in any format for profit or other presentation.
