1780?

The Apocrypha1 has been cut out because of its doubtful authorship.  One

QUENTIN G. ALCORN, 15304160, Sergeant (Then Private First Class), INF,
Company B, Infantry Regiment, for gallantry in action against the enemy,
on 4th of December 1944, in the vicinity of Saarlautern-Roden, Germany. 
When the advance of his platoon was obstructed by heavy machine gun fire
from an enemy bunker, Sergeant Alcorn crawled to the bunker and entered
it.  Proceeding down the dark corridors he came upon the room from which
the terrible fire was being delivered.  Surprised by Sergeant Alcorn's
bold, stern demand, the entire garrison of twelve German soldiers
surrendered themselves and their machine gun. Sergeant Alcorn's daring
action enables his platoon to advance without interference from the
bunker.  His outstanding courage reflects great credit on Sergeant Alcorn
and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service. 
Entered military service from Indiana.
