PATOKA.

A town of about 800 inhabitants in Gibson county, on the Evansville &
Crawfordsville railroad, thirty-one miles from Evansville and seventy-eight from
Terre Haute. It has three churches and a good school, for the accommodation of
which a fine building has just been erected, at a cost of $6,000. Beside the
usual number of stores and shops it has two distilleries and rectifying
establishments, three saw mills, a planing mill, a flouring mill, two large
cooper shops, and other manufacturing establishments. The surrounding country
produces large quantities of grain, pork and lumber, which is shipped from this
place.
