All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/in/infiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Nancy Poquette npoq@hotmail.com March 21, 2007, 12:55 pm Pension Application Of David Stilwell, Nat’l Archives Series M804, Roll ____ Application #S36816 Gibson County, Indiana} Be it remembered that on the 27th day of June1818, before me, the subscriber one of the judges of the Gibson Circuit Court and state aforesaid, personally came and appeared, David Stilwell, aged 63 years on the 29th of October next, resident in our said county of Gibson and state aforesaid, who being duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration…: That he enlisted in Guilford County in the state of North Carolina in the company commanded by Captain John Summers of the 1st regiment commanded by Colonel Thomas Clark. That he enlisted in the month of May in the year 1777, and continued in the service till the summer of 1781, when he was discharged from the service in the state of North Carolina at Halifax by Colonel Clark. That he was in the following battles, to wit: The Battle of Monmouth in June 1778, and the Siege of Charleston in the year of 1780, and that he was there taken prisoner by the English and remained prisoner on board of prison ship till the summer of 1781, when he was exchanged at old Jamestown in Virginia, and was marched from thence to Halifax in North Carolina and discharged by Colonel Clark as before mentioned. And he further saith that he received a wound in the hip in the Battle of Charleston before he was taken prisoner and that he thinks he feels some inconvenience from the said wound and further states that he is in reduced circumstances and stands in need of the assistance of his country for support, and that he has no other evidence now in his power to prove and substantiate his service as his discharge is not in his possession at this time. David Stilwell Subscribed and sworn to this 27th day of June, 1818. In the Gibson Circuit Court, October term, 1820, District of Indiana, Gibson County} On this day, he 17th day of October, in the year 1820, personally appeared in open court, it being a court of record created by the constitution and the laws of this state for the county and state aforesaid, David Stilwell, aged 65 years the 29th of this instant, resident within said district, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath, declare that he served in the Revolutionary War as follows, to wit: That he enlisted as a regular soldier in the Revolutionary War in May, 1777 at Guilford Courthouse, North Carolina, for the term of three years under Captain Rolston, and immediately transferred to the company commanded by Captain Summers of the 1st North Carolina regiment commanded by Colonel Clark, and continued in service until he was taken prisoner at Charleston, South Carolina in May 1780 by General Clinton, and remained a prisoner about 14 months, and was exchanged at Old Jamestown, Virginia, and then came on to Halifax, North Carolina where he was discharge by Colonel Clark, and was in the following battles, to wit: the Battle of Monmouth in New Jersey, the Battle at Charleston, South Carolina, where he was taken prisoner, and where he received a wound in the left hip. And I do solemnly swear that I was a resident citizen of the United States on the 18th day of March, 1818, and that I have not, since that time, by gift or sale or in any manner disposed of my property or any part thereof with intent thereby to diminish it as to bring myself within the provisions of an Act of Congress …and that I have not, nor has any person in trust for me, any properties, securities, contracts or debts due to me, nor have I any income other than what is contained in the schedule hereto annexed and by me subscribed. A schedule of the property owned by David Still as follows, to wit: One small pot, one cracked oven, one small skillet, 11 old pewter plates, two milk crocks, 5 small dirt bowls, one old Bible, one testament, 1 hymnbook, 1Presbyterian Confession of Faith, 1 old churn, 1 candlestick and lamp, and candle molds, 5 old tin cups, 1 small piggen, 1 old flatiron, 1 old sieve, 1 pair of steelyards, 5 old chairs, 2 small dirt ?kegs, 1 old saddle, 1 old flax wheel, 1 old cotton wheel, 1 table, 2bottles, 2 old ploughs, 2 weeding hoes, an old pair of drawing chains, 3 old clevises, 2 old axes, 1 ?fro and 1 iron wedge, part of the old irons of a wagon, 2 cows and 2 calves, 1 heifer and yearling, 2 horses, 16 head of hogs, 80 acres of woodlands, which I purchased I part with the pension money I have already received, 5 knives and forks, 5 spoons, 1 old broken handsaw, 2 small augurs, 1 old mattock, and I have $134.50 of old continental money which I received for my services as a soldier. And I have the following family living with me, to wit: my wife, Mourning Stilwell, aged 43 years old, who is entirely blind and has been for nearly 2 years, and the greater part of her time, not able to get out of bed without help; also Osburn Stilwell, 14 years of age; and my occupation is a farmer but not able to do hard labor in consequence of the wound I received in the Revolutionary War. And the date of my original declaration for the purposes of procuring a pension from the United States is dated the 27th day of June, 1818, and a pension certificate granted me bearing date the 15th day of September 1819, numbered 14889, and further this deponent saith not.
