LAWRENCE WHEELER, JR. (1898-1952) Gibson County, Indiana Father: Lawrence Wheeler, Sr. Mother: Flora Massey Lawrence Wheeler died November 9, 1952 Lawrence Wheeler, Jr., professor of journalism at Indiana University and a for- mer member of the Indianapolis Star edito- rial staff, died in his home in Bloomington, Indiana. He was 54 years old. Death was due to complications of a heart ailment from which Prof. Wheeler had suffered for several years. He was born in Princeton November 25, 1898, son of the Late Lawrence Wheeler, Sr. and Flora Massey Wheeler Springer. He married June 17, 1922 in In- dianapolis Miss Ruth White, daughter of Dr. Thomas White, former chaplain of the Indiana reformatory at Pendleton. A close friend of the late Ernie Pyle, Prof. Wheeler was instrumental in estab- lishing the Ernie Pyle scholarships of I.U. Foundation. He was the first director of the foundation, which administers scholar- ship and research funds for the university, serving in the position from 1944 to 1949. Prof. Wheeler was graduated from I.U. in 1921. He then studied at Columbia University and later worked at The Star for 3 years. He had been a consultant in fund- raising activities of more than 200 educa- tional, charitable and religious institutions during the last 20 years. He also worked with the Presbyterian Board of Christian Education in providing building and en- dowment funds for colleges under the con- trol of the Presbyterian church. Prof. Wheeler was an avid historian of early Hoosier life and I.U.'s past. A col- lector of old books, he was instrumental in obtaining a number of valuable manu- scripts and documents for the I.U. library. He wrote a weekly column of I.U. history for the Bloomington Star-Courier. A veteran of World War I, he served overseas. He served as consultant to the US Treasury Dept. and sided in the organi- zation of the Defense Savings plan from which World War II loan campaigns were developed. He was a Mason and member of the Presbyterian Church, he was a charter member of the Princeton post of the American Legion and past president of the Bloomington Kiwanis Club. He also had served on the board of governors of the Society of Indiana Pioneers and as director of the Indiana Kiwanis Foundation.
