For the years of 1903-04-05" CONTENTS I. Pre-Seminary Period II. The "Seminary Period" III. Trustees and Officers of the Princeton Public Schools IV. Annual Baccaluareate Sermons I.  "Pre-Seminary Period" Formal Education in Princeton began in 1812 in a log house on the south bank of the branch near South Main Street.  Following are the names of those as far as can be found, who "wrought and taught" at this early period: 1812-1815 Adley Donald 1815-1817 David Buck 1817-1830 (In an old log school house which stood about where the United Presbyterian church now stands.) Solomon D. King, John Coursely, Matthew Cunningham, William Chittenden. 1820-1829 (In the Old Covenanter Church which stood about where the Cumberland Presbyterian parsonage now stands) William Chittenden, Ira Bostick, Major James Smith, Rev. John Kell These were a few names that have come down to us and having taught school at this period. II. The "Seminary Period." The "Old Seminary" building which stood just in front of where the present Irving school now stands, was completed in 1829 and was first occupied in the fall and winter of the same year.  It was used for school purposes until the completion of the present Irving school in 1871.  Following are the names of those who taught in the "Old Seminary," with their tenure of office.  This data was procured after much time spent in interviewing the oldest inhabitants in Princeton and in perusing the files of the old Princeton Clarion: 1829 Calvin Butler, Andrew Erskin, Assistant 1830-1832 Calvin Butler (?) 1832-1833 Hiram A. Hunter 1833-1834 Hiram A Hunter (?) 1834-1835 Thomas Horbrook 1835-1836 William Rowe 1836-1837 John J. McClerkin 1837-1839 Rev. H. H. Patten and wife 1839-1842 Wm. J. Bryden 1842-1843 Wm. Trurstees and Officers of the Princeton Public Schools Below is given a list of the trustees, superintendents, and the principals of the high school, from September 1860 to September 1906, inclusive.  The year 1860 is chosent as a beginning from the fact that the system of graded schools was begun at that time.  Properly speaking, however, there were no superintendents or high school principals until 1871 when the system of tuition was finally abolished, a sufficient school tax levied to meet all expenses and attendance at school made entirely free.   The names of the officers from 1860 to 1871 were found, only after diligent search through the old files of the Princeton Clarion.
