Grant County Indiana ATKINSON Located on the State Road #221 in Monroe Township. This is one of the early family burying grounds. I can find very little about it. The earliest stone is marked 11th month, 1842, Levi son of Chas. & L. Atkinson. Charles Atkinson was the chief conductor and maintained the main office of an Underground Railway in that period before the Civil War. The above was written by the DAR in the 1940's. I found this cemetery on what is now State Road #5, but it was State Road #221 then. It sits on a hill overlooking Walnut Creek. The 1877 Grant Co. Atlas says that Charles Atkinson entered his land in Monroe Twp. in 1836, but it was 2 more years before he brought his family there to live. This cemetery lies on that land. His son James was living on a part of that parcel in 1877. The stone of Charles, in the Atkinson Cemetery, states he was born in York Co., Pennsylvania June 21, 1796. Note the number of Atkinson's buried here. It was open to other families as well. There is strong possibilities that a good number of the other names were related in some way to the Atkinson's. This cemetery was a total read, of which I recorded 188 names. 51 of these were Atkinson's, more than 1/3. At the time of this writing William J. Pierce, 1906 - 1987, was the last burial to take place. Since 1950 there have been approximately 21 burials. There appears to be room for several more. * Denotes a stone not found at this time.
