UNION CHAPEL/BEEKMAN CEMETERY Union Chapel Cemetery lies in the north east corner of Washington Township. It is on the north side of the road and facing what was once known as the Beekman farm, but is owned today by Russell Wine. According to Whitson's History of Grant County the church was erected in 1876 but the deed for it was made in 1879. A part of it follows: Page 573, Deed Book 18. "Isaac Bradford deeds to William R. Jackson, Jefferson Hamaker, Christopher B. Porter and Isaac Bradford trustees of the United Brethren Church and their successors in office, for the sum of $50., the following real estate******Commencing at a point in the north east corner of the cemetery known as the Beekman Cemetery******containing one acre and being a part of the south end of the west half of the north west quarter of Section #18, Township 25 North Range 8 East." The date is June 7, 1876 and is signed by Isaac Bradford. Many pioneers of the county lie buried here. Two of them were veterans of the War of 1812 - Jesse Romine and Levi Carter. The church was used by the denominations, the United Brethren and the Society of Friends. The early name of the cemetery, Beekman, has long ago been discarded and even those who attended school there long ago have forgotten that it ever bore such name. The church and cemetery are now both known as Union Chapel. The above was written by the DAR in the 1940's. I worked in this cemetery in July of 1996. It is located on the north side of 550 N. just east of 500 E. in Washington Township in Section 12 Township 25 N Range 8 E. This cemetery should not be confused with Union Chapel in Fairmount Township. In the above information we see that this cemetery was once called the Beekman Cemetery. This is evidenced by the fact that over 50 readings are listed below with death dates many years before the 1876 date on the Union Chapel Church. Interesting to note here is the fact that there once was an active church just a few miles south of here of the Dunkard or German Baptist denomination. On the 20th day of May 1877 this church was partially destroyed by what they called a cyclone. A Union Sunday school had been organized by the good people of the vicinity and at 4 o'clock in the afternoon on the above date, when perhaps one hundred and fifty persons were engaged in the study of the lesson, a threatening cloud accompanied by lightning flashes and rolling thunder made it's appearance. (For more on this story see Whitson's History of Grant County - 1914 pg. 275). Two young men were killed in this storm and I didn't find them in the Tinkel Cemetery that was just across the road from this church. One was Eddie Mills the other was John Jackson. In this cemetery I found a John Jackson died June 7, 1877 aged 16y.9m.7d. and another stone for M.E. Mills with no other information on it. Could these two be the two young men killed in the cyclone at the German Baptist Church? The following narrative was taken from "Whitson's History of Grant County" - 1914, page 275 -6. "Union Chapel, in the northeastern part of the township, was built in 1876 and dedicated in the same year by Rev. J.W. Holt of Dayton, Ohio. This church was erected by the United Brethren and Quakers, but the United Brethren had the deed to the property. The first trustees were C.B. Porter, Isaac Bradford, Daniel Shank and William R. Jackson. Prominent among the charter members were Daniel Creviston, Jefferson Hamaker and F.A. Bradford. the Weesners, Crevistons, Calentines and Gaines were among the first worshippers. The old church was remodeled a couple of years ago and all modern improvements added. It's decorated interior, with its art windows, is in keeping with the elegant homes which grace this part of the township. Rev. Cyrus Smith was the first pastor of this church." I am regretful to say this fine church is now gone (1996). I don't know when it was removed. You can still see the foundation and walks of the church, even the supports are still there. All the large bushes and trees, that once made this cemetery a place of beauty have also been removed. * Denotes a stone not found at this time. Union Chapel/Beekman Cemetery Aker, __________ C. P.A.
