D., Newark, was born in Owen County, Ind., December 25, 1856, one of eleven children in the family of E. and M. (Bray) Hickam. He received a thorough ordinary education in the public schools of his native county, and at nineteen years of age began teaching school, which profession he followed four consecutive years. He then began the study of medicine with Dr. Schell, of Spencer, with whom he remained until the fall of 1880, when he entered the Medical Department of Butler University, from which institution he graduated March 1, 1883. Dr. Hickam then located for the practice of medicine at Newark, where he has won flattering success in his profession, both in the treatment of cases and in acquiring a lucrative practice. He is one of the lively, wide-awake men of Newark, progressive in his views on all subjects, is a Democrat in politics, and a member of the Odd Fellows fraternity. Dr. Hickam met with a serious and distressing accident June 26, 1864, which was the loss of his left limb at the junction of the middle and upper thirds of the femur, leaving him a cripple for life.
