In 1845, he came to Greene County, Ind., and with the exception of four years while he was engaged in merchandising in Scotland, under the firm name of Haig & McElroy, he has been employed in farming and raising stock. By a life of hard work and prudential economy, Mr. McElroy has secured property in real estate amounting to 862 acres of good land. He is a Republican in politics; and was married in 1844 to Miss Martha Stewart, by whom he was the father of eight children, four of whom are living—Matthew S., Mary L., Samuel C. and Lucy. The parents are members of the United Presbyterian Church, and Mr. McElroy is a son of Matthew and Eleanor (McConnell).McElroy, who were the parents of ten children, seven of whom are vet living.
