He was a blacksmith by trade and of Union sentiments, hence he came to Greene County, Indiana as soon as he could escape, near the close of the Civil War and located at the place of his late residence and lived there until he died. Many years ago he united with the Primitive Baptist Church and after he came to Park, Greene Co., Indiana, he united with the Regular Baptist Church of Christ, of which Elder Fulk was the pastor. Some 14 years later he untied with the Church of God at Matamoras, Indiana and then took his membership to Walnut Grove, Indiana when the Church of God was organized there and remained a faithful member there until his death. He was married before the Civil War, in Monroe County, TN, to Mrs. Ellen Jones. Seven children were born to them, two of whom are still living at the time this was written. He then came to his Aunt and Uncle Peyton and Sophia Jones Godad's home in Greene County, Indiana. There he lived with his cousin, but did not marry her, Sarah Goad and they had three sons: Joseph, Sherman Richard, who died in infancy and Mark. He then married Martha Jane Goad, 25 Aug 1872. To this union six children were born: one son and 5 daughters. The son and one daughter died in infancy. The other four daughters, with their mother, became members of the Church of God at Walnut Grove church. Before his death, he donated the bell for the church at Walnut Grove. His children by his first marriage were: (Taken from the 1860 Census). 1. Mary A. Jones. Born about 1853 in Monroe Co., TN. Not traced further. 2. Allen J. Jones. Born about 1855 in Monroe Co., TN. Family tradition says he was a great horseman and at one time he took all his money and life possessions and rode up to Indiana to see his father. He never arrived nor was he heard from again. The family speculates he was murdered somewhere along the way. 3.Louisa Emeline Jones. Born about 1857 (from census records) Aug. 1852). Married 10 Apr 1877 to James Madison Rogers. She died 12 Dec. 1936. 4. E. Jones, a female. Born about 1859 in Monroe Co., TN. 5. Maggie Jones. She is mentioned in the will and is assumed to be a daughter of this marriage. Probably married Mr. Rapier. 6. Mollie Jones. Mollie is mentioned in the will and is assumed to be a daughter of this marriage. She probably married Mr. Guyton. 7. Name unknown for this person. Issue by common law wife, Sallie Goad: 8. Joseph Jones. Born 23 Dec. 1866 in Park, Greene Co., IND. Married 2 Aug 1889 to Mary Jane Lewis. (Note: these are my great-grandparents who later resided in State Center, Marshall County, Iowa). 9. Mark Jones. Born 24 Oct 1866/67 in Park, Greene Co., IND. Married 3 Nov 1896 to Mary Alice Fearnot. He died 5 Sept 1949. 10. Richard Jones. Died in infancy. Issue by Jefferson Jones's 2nd marriage: 11. Martin Calvin Jones. Born 1873 in Park, Greene Co., IND. He died in 1875. 12. Pheba Ann Jones. Born 1 Nov. 1875 in Park, Greene Co., IND. Married 21 July 1894 to Noah Wade. She died 15 Aug. 1929. 13. Lydia Jane Jones. Born in 1877 in Park, Greene Co., IND. She died in 1886. 14. Anna Louisa Jones. Born 14 Feb. 1883 in Park, Greene Co., IND. Married 28 Oct 1898 to Everett Addison Denny. She died 2 Nov. 1965. 15. Viola Jones. Born 17 Feb. 1883 in Park, Greene Co., IND. Married 16 Dec. 1902 to Exman Clifton Lewis who was related to my Great-Grandmother Mary Jane Lewis Jones. Viola died 19 July 1936. 16. Nellie Bly Jones. Born 5 March 1885 in Park, Greene Co., IND. Married 28 March 1908 to Levi Stanford. She died 29 July 1975.
