Brownsburg; Farmer, Sec. 16; settled here in 1842; born in Chatham Co., N.C., 1814; son of John and Elizabeth Bray. Married in August, 1842 in Marion Co., to Margaret Schenck; has had twelve children, only four living--Eli S., b.9 12 1852; Martha, b.11 24 1853; Amanda, b.3 8 1850, and Sarah, b.4 22 1859. Mr. Bray was elected Trustee of Brown Township in 1847, served until the change of the Constitution of the State. Has a fine stock farm well improved. CASSERLY, THOMAS, P.O. Fayette, Boone Co.; Farmer, Section 24; settled here in 1854; born in Mason Co, Ky. in 1820; son of James and Nancy Casserly. Married in 1854 in Maysville, Ky., to Margaret Ford; six children: Mary, b. 8 4 1858; Kate, b.3 4 1860; Julia, b.12 25 1862; Homer, b.4 12 1865; Margaret b. 9 12 1867; Michael, b. 6 25 1871. He has a fine stock and grain farm of 140 acres under good cultivation. COMBS, LEVI (deceased), born in Fleming Co, Ky. Feb. 9 1807; settled here in 1841; Section 29. Married in 1836, in Washington Co., Ind., to Lucinda Smith; ten children: Thomas, b.1 25 1837 (deceased); James, b. 7 18 1838; Minerva, b. 7 20 1841;--, b. 5 8 1843; John, b. 1 4 1845; Elias, b. 2 8 1848; Benjamin, b. 2 6 1849; Jennie, b. 2 13 1852; Wilson, b. 3 16 1854; Rolly, b. 11 10 1856 (deceased). Mr. Combs and his wife were members of the Christian Church. DICKERSON, JAMES G., P.O. Trader’s Point, Marion Co.; Farmer, Section 19; born in Muskingum Co., Ohio, April 21 1827; settled here in 1850, son of Burton and Sarah Dickerson. Married in Marion Co. to Sarah Snyder; six children: Marinda S., b. 2 23 1852; Melvina A., b. 11 10 1853; Sarah J., b. 8 6 1856; James T., b. 6 11 1859; George N. b. 11 28 1863 (deceased); the sixth child died in infancy. Mr. D. and his wife settled here when the country was quite new and, by dint of hard work, have secured for themselves a fine home. Both are members of the Christian Church. DUGAN, MICHAEL, P. O. Fayette, Boone Co.; Farmer, Sec. 14; settled h ere in 1858; born in Maysville, Ky. in 1828; son of Mannis and Mary Dugan. Married in 1857, in St. Louis, to Mary Sheridan; one child: Thomas, b. Dec. 26, 1863. He is an industrious, hard-working man, as his farm very well shows. DUGAN, TIMOTHY, P.O. Brownsburg; Farmer, Section 25; settled here in 1854; born in Galway, Ireland in 1823; son of Martin and Bridget Dugan. Married in 1859, in Indianapolis, to Margaret Dugan; five children: Martin, born Jan. 23 1860; Thomas, born May 18, 1863; Bridget, born July 16, 1868; Valentine, born Dec. 4, 1870, and Mary, born April 1, 1876. Ha a good farm under excellent cultivation. Are members of the Catholic Church. FUNKHAUSER, NICHOLAS (deceased), born in Kentucky in 1818; parents’ names James and Sarah; he settled in this township in 1842, and entered eighty acres of land. Married in this county in 1842, to Nancy E. Bradley; four children: George, b. 4 7 1844; Mary, b. 6 15 1845; James, b. 8 24 1849; and Alice, b. 8 17 1853. The widow lives on the old homestead, which is in a good state of cultivation. HOGAN, MARTIN, P.O. Brownsburg; Farmer, Section 31; settled here in 1858; born in Galway, Ireland in 1835; son of James and Bridget Hogan. Married in 1858, in Indianapolis, to Catherine Moran; nine children: Bridget, b. 4 7 1863; Anna, b. 9 12 1865; James, b. 2 2 1871; six have died in infancy. He has a fine farm with one of the nicest barns in the county. The family are earnest Catholics. HOGAN, JOHN, P.O. Brownsburg; Farmer, Section 24; settled here in 1852; born in Galway, Ireland, 1826; son of James and Bridget Hogan. Married in 1857, in Indianapolis, to Hannah Dugan; eight children: Bridget, b.3 19 1859; Kate, b. 9 20 1861; Mary, b. 10 12 1863; James, b. 12 26 1865; Thomas, b. 5 7 1867; Margaret, b. 6 10 1869; Anna, b. 3 20 1872; Catherine, b. 9 12 1873. John Hogan, like his brothe Martin, has a fine home and is a hard worker. Family are members of the Catholic Church. KEENEY, JOHN, P.O. Brownsburg; Farmer, Section 22; settled here in 1862; born in Galway, Ireland in 1838; son of Michael and Margaret Keeney. Married in Indianapolis, in 1866, to Bridget Mullen; three children: Maggie, b. 8 5 1868; Thomas, b. 4 4 1869; Delia, b. 2 14 1874. Has a fine farm well improved. Is hard-working and industrious. MARVEL, GEORGE W., P.O. Trader’s Point, Marion Co. Farmer, Sec. 30; settled in this county in 1863; born in Muskingum Co., Ohio, April 29 1821; son of Robert and Sarah Marvel, who settled here in 1835. Married March 6, 1853 to Sarah Dickerson; six children: Margaret, born Dec. 1853; Ettie, Dec. 28 1855 (deceased); Clara, Jan. 10 1861 (deceased); Frank, June 8, 1865; Ottie, June 15, 1869; Rose, b. May 22, 1875. He was also married to Lucinda Watson Nov. 8, 1875 in Vigo Co., Ind. Mrs. Marvel’s father settled in this county in 1829; lived here thirty years; moved to Marion County, where he died; his wife Elizabeth died on the homestead; both were members of the Christian Church. Mr. Marvel has a fine farm and excellent improvements. MARVEL, JOSEPH, P.O. Trader’s Point, Marion County; Farmer, Section 30; born June 25, 1845; son of Robert and Nancy Marvel. Married December 31, 1863, to Miss Wilson, of this township; four children: Charles E. and Ida E. (twins), b. 9 25 1864; Mary A., b. 12 29 1867; Cora L, b. 12 27 1870. Mr. Marvel served in the 7th Ind. Vols. Is now engaged in clearing a farm for himself in the woods. Hs a fine family of children, and is a worthy citizen. RICE, LEWIS (deceased), born in Bourbon Co., Ky., 1808; son of George E. and Margaret Rice; settled on Sec. 2, this township, 1831. Married in Danville, 1828, to Sophia Harris; nine children: George, b. 12 4 1829; Allen, b. 4 2 1833; Marcellus, b. 1 18 1837; John, b. 10 25 1839; Nancy, b. 3 30 1844; Thornton, b. 10 25 1849; Henry C., b. 3 19 1846; Sarah, b. 7 25 1857; Mary, b. 8 6 1853; Cora, b. 8 7 1855. Mr. Rice was one of the first settlers, and had his farm well improved before his death. Mrs. Rice now lives on the old homestead. Both were members of the Christian Church. ROSS, JOHN M. (deceased), born in Kentucky Jan. 6, 1821; son of Alexander and Nancy Ross. Married Oct. 3, 1850, in Marion Co., to Margaret Railsback; five children: Sarah, b. Aug. 4, 1851; Nancy E., b. Jan. 4 1854; James R., b. Oct 29 1855; Isadora b. Oct. 14, 1857; Esther, b. Sept 25, 1859, died Jan. 24, 1860. Mr. Ross was married again, April 3, 1864, to Mary Jane Hightshire; they had five children, four of them dead; Margaret B. lives with her mother on the old homestead. TARPY, JAMES, P. O. Brownsburg, Farmer, Sec. 33; settled here in 1862; born in Kentucky in 1828; son of John and Kate Tarpy. Married in 1862, in St. Louis, to Nancy Densen; five children: John, b. 6 20 1864; Kate, b. 9 26 1865; Thomas, b. 3 31 1867; James, b. 8 7 1872, and Mary E., b. 11 12 1874. His farm was somewhat improved when he bought it but is constantly adding to it by hard work, energy and perseverance. WARD, THOMAS, P.O. Brownsburg; Farmer, Sec. 36; settled here in 1851; born in Ireland in 1816; son of Michael and Catherine Ward. Married in 1861, in Indianapolis, to Julia Delaney; two children: Mary, b. April 3, 1870; second child died in infancy. They are both members of the Catholic Church. WILSON, JOHN P. deceased, born in Pennsylvania, in 1812; son of Thomas and Jane Wilson; he settled in this county, Sec. 30, Brown Tp., in 1840. Married in 1832 to Sarah Carter, of Marion Co.; seven children: Mary L., b. 11 22 1837; Jane, b. 3 25 1840; Henry, b. 2 28 1842; Isaac, b. 1 4 1844 (deceased); Nancy, b. 10 4 1846; Angeline, b. 8 25 1848, and David, b. 12 4 1850.
