Jan. 6, 1866. HARPER, W.F., son of Henry C. and Sarah L. Harper, was born in Hendricks Co., Ind., March 9, 1854. His youth was spent on the farm in Summer and in the district school in the Winter, after the manner of most boys raised in the country, until he was 14 years of age. In the Fall of 1868, he entered the High School at Amo, then conducted by Prof. J.A. Clark, and remained one year. The next year he attended the High School at Danville, at that time in charge of Prof. A.J. Johnson. In the Fall of 1870, he was examined for a teachers' license and received a general average of 100 per cent. His first school was taught near Clayton. In his new capacity, his force of character and power to govern others exhibited themselves in a marked degree. In February, 1871, immediately after the close of his school, he entered the National Normal, at Lebanon, Ohio. In the Fall of that year, he took charge of the Amo High School and conducted it with eminent success. Again returning to the Normal in the Spring of 1872, he remained until his graduation in the full course of that institution, Aug. 15, 1873. He was again chosen to conduct the Amo High School, and although elected at two other points, he returned to the scene of his former labors. In June, 1874, he was tendered the position of Principal Instructor in the Teacher's Department of his alma mater. Closing his work at Amo with the good wishes of all, he entered upon his important duties at Lebanon July 7, 1874. Occupying one of the more responsible positions in the Institution, Mr. Harper did his work in such a thorough and satisfactory manner as to win the admiration and respect of his pupils and fellow teachers. In September, 1876, Profs. Harper and Darst established the Central Normal School at Ladoga, Indiana. Mr. Darst retiring the next Summer, Mr. Harper took entire control of the Institution and increased its size greatly, there not being sufficient room in the town for the students who desired to attend. Accordingly Danville proposed to donate her large Academy buildings and grounds to Mr. Harper if he would remove his school. The proposition was accepted, and the Central Normal School was removed to Danville May 10th, 1878. It has been more prosperous since the removal than ever before in its history. The Faculty consists of ten Professors and teachers, and the enrollment of students for the present year will exceed 400. Prof. Harper was married in June, 1874, to Miss H.
