Plainfield.  In the Atlas will be seen an engraving of an improved Automatic Gate.  This is the invention of Mordecai Cartere, of Hendricks County; son of Newlin and Beulah Carter; he was born in this county at his father's present home near Plainfield, April 5, 1856; worked upon the farm in Summer, and attended school in Winter, afterward attended graded school at Plainfield.  He commenced working on his gate in the Spring of 1876, and finally got the first model in the Fall of the same year.  Made application and received Letters Patent Nov. 27, 1877.  Among the many flattering testimonials given by those using the gate, we reproduce but one, which will be sufficient, from J.W. Furnas, Superintendent of Indiana State Board of Agriculture: "I cheerfully comply with thy request, in giving my opinion of Carter's Automatic Gate, by testifying that after examination and trial, I can unhesitatingly say that it does certainly possess superior merit by combining in its construction simplicity and durability, being very easily operated, which facts, taken together, will, beyond a doubt, recommend it as the gate for the people."  (Signed) J.W. COOK, S.M., Owner and Proprietor of the Mansion House, Plainfield, Ind., is the son of George W. and Elizabeth Cook, natives of Maryland and Pennsylvania.  S.M. was born Oct. 24, 1836, in Chester Co., Penn., and, with his parents, moved to Madison Co., Ind., in 1857.  George and Susannah Nicholson settled in Madison Co., Ind., in 1830.  Their daughter, Lydia E., was born Oct. 9, 1840.  Jan. 2, 1862, she was married to S.M. Cook.  They located in Indianapolis in 1863, where Mr. Cook engaged in teaming and keeping a feed store.  He hauled the first iron for the first street railway located in Indianapolis; he also helped manufacture the brick for the Arsenal.  In 1865, Mr. Cook located and engaged in the grocery and provision trade in Plainfield, Ind.; his first efforts were failures and he was compelled to dispose of his stock; he then tried the manufacture of tile; this did not pay; having disposed of the tile factory, he commenced again in business, this time in groceries and hardware; his last efforts have been very successful and he has built up a large trade.  In 1876, he purchased his present home and business block.  By the assistance of his worthy wife, the Mansion House is a neat, comfortable home for the traveling public, while he carries on his trade in the rooms below.  He is a member of Plainfield Lodge, No. 287, of masons, also of Chapter No. 87, also of Lodge No. 232, of Odd Fellows.  Two children living--Charles W. and George Edward. EVANS, THOMAS, M.D., born Oct. 8, 1821, in County Denbighshire, North Wales; fifth son of Thomas and Martha Evans; the father's family being of Welsh descent, and the mother's of English; his father died during the first year of his life; was apprenticed at 14 to the tailoring trade and served six years; when 15, he united with the Christian Church and is still a member; April, 1841, he sailed for New Holland, and after 143 days, arrived in Sidney, South Australia; in July, 1842, sailed for the United States, touching at New Zealand and South America; arrived in Boston Dec. 1842, having circumnavigated the globe; remained in Boston, Charlestown and New York some time.  Anxious to improve his education, he settled in Clinton, N.Y.; afterward in Manchester, where he carried on business for himself, securing means to commence his studies, he prepared for college in 1844, at Clinton, afterward at Whiteston Seminary; entered Hamilton College in 1847, his trade being the only means there of his support; received the degree of A.B. in 1851, and chose the medical profession for a livelihood.  Taught school two years in Gallatin, Miss., and then entered the office of Prof. Howard, Columbus, Ohio; the following Winter, he attended lectures at the Starling Medical College, and the next Summer, made a visit to his mother and the scenes of his childhood.  On returning, the steamship "City of Philadelphia," on which he sailed, struck Cape Race, and was wrecked in Chance Cove, Newfoundland; arrived, however, in Philadelphia, and afterward attended lectures in New York, graduating at New York University in the Spring of 1855.  Spent some time among the city hospitals, and then went to Madison, Wis., afterward to Portland, Ind., where he practiced medicine, and in Nov., 1858, settled in Plainfield.  Was Assistant Surgeon in the United States Army during the rebellion; helped conduct wounded soldiers from Vickburg to St. Louis hospitals, and was afterward in Camp Alexander, St. Louis.  In the Winter of 1869-70, he again visited the hospitals in New York, and attended lectures at Bellevue Hospital Medical College. Returned to Plainfield in the Spring.  Was married Nov. 30, 1871, to Mattie G. Grinnell, of Iowa City; has one son, William Everett, born Feb. 2, 1876; lost a pair of twin daughters, born Oct. 2, 1874.  Built his fine brick residence, as shown in the cut, in 1870. HOCKETTE, JESSE (deceased), was a native of North Carolina, born Feb. 23, 1808; he moved with his parents to this county in 1822, and settled with them near Plainfield.  His first marriage was with Miss Jane Cooper, by whom he had four children, one living-- Adoline, who is now the wife of John S. Moore; Mrs. Jane Hockette died March 31, 1851; was married the second time, July 3, 1852, to Mrs. Catherine, widow of Lemuel Hudson, daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Oursler, who was born in Brown Co., Ohio, Feb. 18, 1825.  Mr. Hockette's business was first selling goods; afterward, he opened the first hotel that was kept in Plainfield; having sold his hotel property he bought a large farm near Plainfield, where he lived for fifteen years.  His health being poor he bought a home in the village, where he lived until his death, Jan. 6, 1826.  In faith, Mr. Hockette was a Friend.  Mrs. Catherine, his widow, lives in their home, and is a member of the Methodist Church. JESSUP, JOEL.  Joseph Jessup, a native of North Carolina, was born in 1793; Rachel Jackson, of North Carolina, was born in 1796; they were married in 1815, and located in Hendricks Co., Ind., in 1823; Joseph Jessup died June 28, 1864; Rachel, his wife, died March 12, 1875; their son Joel, present owner of the old farm, was born April 6, 1832.  The 12th of August, 1852, he married Louisa, daughter of Joseph and Mary Moon, who settled in Morgan Co., Ind., in 1822; children have been born as follows: Harrison B., Theodore W., Jessie F. and William S.  Mr. Jessup has added to the homestead, until it now contains over 300 acres of fine land; he carries on an extensive dairy business, shipping his milk to Indianapolis; has fifty head of fine graded milkers, also owns and operates a fine flouring and custom mill at Friendswood on his farm; is prosperous, happy, energetic and well respected.  Himself and family are members of Friends' Church. Plainfield; son of William and Delilah Lewis; was born in Blount Co., Tenn., Oct. 18, 1838; settled here in 1865.  Married Oct. 14, 1866, to Mary, daughter of A.F. and Isabella Wilson; has two children--Ernest, b. July 22, 1867, and Euretta, b. July 28, 1870.  Graduated in 1861, in the Medical Department, University, Nashville, Tenn.; first practice was as Surgeon in the United States army, in 1863. LITTLE, SAMUEL, the subject of this sketch, was a son of Alexander and Rachel Little, natives of Virginia, who emigrated to Mercer Co., Ky. and finally settled in Hendricks Co., Ind., in 1830, in Liberty Township, where they remained until death.  Samuel was born in Mercer Co., Ky., April 26, 1810; emigrated with his parents to Indiana the same year.  He was married Nov. 12, 1829, to Miss Rebecca Green, daughter of Robert and Rebecca Green, of Washington Co., Ind.; she was born June 3, 1812, in North Carolina.  By their marriage there were born unto them eleven children; four children died in infancy; one--Joseph by name--was born Dec. 17, 1836, and died July 12, 1837; Alexander, born May 23, 1844, died Feb. 2, 1853; the living are Sarah, born Sept. 12, 1830, now Mrs. Edward C. Crawford; Elizabeth, born March 10, 1833, now Mrs. Daniel Cox; Mary Ann, wife of Benjamin Edmondson, born Sept. 23, 1834; Robert G., born Nov. 11, 1839; Melissa Jane, now Mrs. S. Pierson, born April 7, 1849; Thomas H., born Oct. 20, 1854.  Mr. Little located his present homestead in 1830, as seen in view, and had to contend with unbroken forest. Not being afraid of hard work the sturdy trees were soon cut away and fertile fields dotted the farm.  By industry and prudence he has accumulated, until he now owns, after helping his children to a comfortable start in life, over four hundred acres of good land.  He is Superintendent of and large shareholder in the Plainfield and Cartersburg gravel road, besides owning bank and other stocks.  He and his wife are both honored members of the Presbyterian Church, and enjoy the love and confidence of their many friends and acquaintances. MOON, JOHN, resides on Sec. 16; was born Aug. 20, 1826, in Brown Township, Morgan County; when 9 months old, his parents settled on present homestead, where he has lived ever since; his father, James, was born Jan. 21, 1785, in Randolph Co., N.C.; moved near Mooresville May 30, 1826, died July 16, 1849; mother, Margaret, b. 5 26, 1788, d. July 3, 1861.  Mr. Moon is still single. MOORE, JOHN S., P.O. Plainfield.  The subject of this sketch is the son of Jacob K. and Phebe W. Moore, who settled in Danville, Hendricks Co, Ind., in 1839.  Jacob K. Moore was born in Hawkins Co., Tenn., Feb. 24, 1818; Phebe W. Rich was born in Bristol, Conn., in 1813.  They were married Oct. 20, 1839; John S., the second child in the family, was born in Danville, Hendricks Co., Oct. 24, 1842.  His early life was spent in attending school and assisting his father at blacksmithing.  At the breaking out of the rebellion, he enlisted in Co.A., of the 7th Regt. Ind. Vols.; served his time out, and re- enlisted in July, 1862, in Co.A., 4th Ind. Cav.; was prompted to Regimental Commissary Sergeant July 5, 1864; was under Gens. Thomas and Sherman, and participated in the different battles, from that of Perrysville, Ky., to the fall of Atlanta, and then under Gen. Wilson in his march through Alabama and Georgia, closing up the final scenes of the rebellion.  Mr. Moore was discharged at Nashville, Tenn., July 7, 1865.  He returned to his home in Indiana, and was joined in marriage to Miss Adaline, daughter of Jesse and Jane Hockett, of Plainfield, Ind., Oct. 18, 1865; after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Moore made their home with her parents, and Mr. Moore superintended the farm.  At the end of two years, Father Hockett purchased a home and moved to Plainfield, Ind., turning the farm over to Mr. and Mrs. Moore; Mr. Moore has increased the farm until it now contains 500 acres of land.  He is engaged in farming and buying and feeding cattle, in which he is having very good success.  His home, as seen in view, is just west of and near to Plainfield, Hendricks Co., Ind.  By this union, the following children have been born-- Addison W., born July 30, 1866; Nettie J., born May 31, 1868; Catharine, born May 29, 1870; Jesse H., born June 14, 1872, and Esther P. Moore, born Nov. 16, 1875; John S., born Aug. 28, 1877, died Oct. 4, 1877.  Mr. and Mrs. Moore are both working members of the Methodist Church, and live in the love and confidence of their many friends. Plainfield.  Obadiah Morgan was born in 1796; Ann Jones was born in 1801.  They were married in Knoxville, Tenn., in 1820; moved to Indiana in 1833, and to this county in 1838, and now live with John Morgan, their son, near Plainfield; John was born Sept. 3, 1838; his early life was spent attending school and teaching; he took a classical course at Earlham College, graduating in 1866; for five years following, he devoted his time to teaching.  He was married to Mary E. Gregory, of Adrian, Mich., Jan. 3, 1869; their first child, Grace, died in infancy; since which one child has been born, named Ralph G.; since 1871, Mr. Morgan has been reading law, and has lately been admitted to the bar; in connection with his law practice, which has become quite lucrative, he superintends both his own and father's farm.  His home, on the eminence just west of and adjacent to Plainfield, is one of unusual beauty and attractiveness, and second to none in Hendricks County. STARBUCK, SAMUEL, was born in Clinton Co., Ohio, Sept. 27, 1812; his youthful days were divided between farm labor and attending district school in a log school house with puncheon floor and greased paper windows, so common at that early day.  He was married Nov. 1, 1832, to Rebecca Furnas, who was born Feb. 9, 1815, also a native of Ohio; they moved to the present homestead in 1834.  July 1, 1846, Mrs. Starbuck died; Mr. Starbuck and Luzena, daughter of Isaac and Ann Jessup, were joined in marriage the 3d day of March, 1848; she was born Sept. 16, 1825; by this marriage a large family of children have been born, named as follows: Isaac, Asa, Anna, Levi, Ella, Alva, Elwood, William and Edwin Eli; Calvin, at the age of 2 1/2 years, was burned to death by his clothes catching fire, oct. 24, 1859.  Mr. Starbuck stands high as a citzen in his county.  He has been chosen Trustee of his township, which office he has filled satisfactorily for several years; in 1874, he was elected a member of the Board of County Commissioners, which office he still holds.  He and family are members of the Friends' Church. Tenn., Sept. 13, 1803, son of William, who died in Tennessee Oct. 17, 1812, and Elizabeth Milliken, mother, emigrated with her second husband, B.
