Clayton; Lumber Merchant; born July 22, 1839, in Ripley Co., Ind.; his parents were Aaron Acton, born in Virginia in the year 1801, died Jan. 1, 1849, and Mary A. Egan, who died Aug. 18, 1853; Mr. Acton settled in Clayton, Liberty Township, March 17, 1865, and Jan. 31, 1869, was married to Julia A. Hall; two children have been born to them--Seth Otis, born Feb. 18, 1872, died in infancy; Glen Rose, born Feb. 13, 1874; Mrs. Aaron Acton was born March 9, 1846; her father, Samuel B. Hall, was born Oct. 8, 1812; her mother, Mary Ann Fitch, was born Aug. 26, 1816; they were married July 2, 1835. AIRY, WILLIAM, P.O. Monrovia, Morgan Co.; Farmer, Section 36; settled in this Co., in 1855; born in Preble Co., Ohio, March 8, 1827; son of John Airy, born Oct. 18, 1802, in Penn., and Keziah Jones, born in North Carolina, Feb. 21, 1804; they were married Nov. 11, 1824. William was married June 21, 1849, at West Union Meeting House, to Emeline Johnson, born Dec. 26, 1829; her father, Philip, was born June 21, 1804; mother, Martha S. Hubbard, born April 16, 1808; they were married in 1827, and are still living. One child--Mahala, born July 11, 1851. BROWN, PRESTON, P.O. Clayton; Farmer, Section 8; settled in 1828, in that part of Brown Township now called Lincoln, Section 19; born in Fayette Co., Ky.; son of David Brown and Elizabeth Short. Married Nov. 1833, at Bridgeport, Ind., to Lydia Murdock; married again Nov. 17, 1844, to Didania Parnell; had one child, aged 8 years, thrown from the arms of her nurse while riding on horseback near Bridgeport. Edgar Brown, adopted son of Preston Brown, was born May 1, 1855, near Clayton; his parents died while he was an infant and he has lived with his adopted father all his life, having now charge of all their farms. Was married at Amo Oct. 7, 1875, to Kezia Wheeler. Mr. Preston Brown served during the Black Hawk war in a cavalry regiment, and was where the city of Chicago now stands when there was nothing but a fort and a public house. George W. Parnell, a son of Mr. Brown's second wife, was born Sept. 7, 1840, and died Oct. 29, 1862, from disease contracted in the war of the rebellion, while on his way home. BUSBY, WILLIAM, P.O. Clayton; Farmer, Section 21; born in Knox Co., Ky., Feb. 16, 1823; his father, Miles Busby, was born in Georgia, April 9, 1794; removed, with his parents, to Tennessee, and afterward to Kentucky, where he married Ellen Harrison, Dec. 25, 1821; came to this township in 1832, and settled on Section 16, where he now lives with his youngest son, John T.; Mrs. Busby was born in North Carolina, March 28, 1805, and died Nov. 7, 1876; their children are William, born in 1823; Margaret, 1825; Mary, 1827; Rebecca, 1829; Martha, 1832; Rachel, Feb. 1835; Susannah, April 12, 1837; Lucinda, March 28, 1839; Smith, May 28, 1842; Elizabeth, 1844; John T., Dec. 9, 1852; they are all living so near each other, that Mr. Busy, their father can walk to the farthest one in two hours' time. Hamlet, daughter of William Hamlet and Jane Hadley-Hamlet; the former was born Aug. 9, 1805; moved from Georgia to Indiana, and died in Iowa, May, 1852; the latter was born Oct. 17, 1813, in North Carolina, and died, at John Jackson's, Jan.22, 1865; they were married near Plainfield June 12, 1834. Was married Aug. 20, 1872, in Franklin Tp., Hendricks Co., Ind., to Alice Snoddy; two children--May, born June 20, 1873, and Bertha, born Dec. 25, 1875, died in infancy. His father was born in Connecticut Aug. 22, 1792; settled at Indianapolis, 1821; married Oct. 19, 1823, near Indianapolis; died March 20, 1876, in Clayton; his mother was born in Virginia March 16, 1806, and died 1863, in Clayton. McCORMACK, VINCENT LEE, Farmer, Sec. 32; born in Franklin Co., Va., Jan. 21, 1824; came to this township, with his parents, in 1828. Married Dec.5, 1847, to Susannah Osborn, who was born in Rockcastle Co., Ky., July, 1823. His father, Wright McCormack, was born Dec. 24, 1791; moved from Virginia to Tennessee in 1826, and from there to Johnson Co., Ind., in 1828, and in the Fall of the same year moved to Hendricks Co. and entered the West 1/2 of S. E. 1/4 of Sec. 32, in this township, and died on same place April 30, 1836. His mother, Charlotte Payne-McCormack, was born Jan. 13, 1799, and died Sept. 1, 1873. The names of his children are Nicholas W., born July 8, 1849, died July 19, 1851 (one child, born same date, was stillborn); James M., born Sept. 22, 1850, died July 15, 1851; Josiah, born June 24, 1852, married to Harriet Jane Givan in Dearborn Co., Ind., Jan. 10, 1878; Minerva J., born April 2, 1854; Roseanna, born July 2, 1856, died June 23, 1877; Malinda E., born Sept. 5, 1858, married Feb. 15, 1877, to James M. Trent, who died Nov. 29, 1877; Sarah F., born April 23, 1863, died July 8, 1877. Mr. McCormack lived on his farm before the land was entered, and has hauled wheat to Madison and sold it for forty cents per bushel. MILES, JOHN, P.O. Belleville; Farmer, Sec. 11; settled on Sec. 5 1830; born in Pasquotauk Co., N.C., Jan. 30, 1814; son of Thomas Miles and Sarah Nichols, who died while John was a child. Married April 5, 1840, at Belleville, in Christian Church, to Elizabeth Hollingworth, b. in Clinton Co., Ohio, Nov. 10, 1818; came to this county, with her parents, 1824. Mr. Miles started in life very poor, but now has a large tract of land, and is one of the foremost men in the county; quite a large stockholder in First Nat. Bank, Danville. RAGAN, WILLIAM H., HON., P.O. Clayton; son of Reuben and Jane B. Matthews- Ragan; was born March 29, 1836, in Putnam Co., Ind., settled in this township, Sec. 34, in the year 1871. Married in Parke Co., Ind., Feb. 19, 1860, to Emma Fuller. Mr. Ragan's father died Aug. 9, 1869; his mother is still living. The parents of Mrs. Ragan both died in Baltimore while she was an infant; her father was captain of a merchant vessel. His children are as follows--Nevie, born Feb. 13, 1861; Sophia J., born May 5, 1863, drowned in Walnut Creek, Putnam Co., Ind., Feb. 9, 1878; Belle, born Feb. 21, 1867, and Reuben, born Aug. 15, 1871. Mr. Ragan is Senator from Hendricks and Putnam Counties, and is also Secretary of the Indiana Horticultural Society, and member of the State Board of Agriculture. RANKIN, ROBERT P., P.O. Clayton; born Aug. 10, 1824, in Oldham Co., Ky.; son of Samuel and Sarah Rankin; settled in Plainfield, Guilford Tp., in 1875. Married Nov. 8, 1858, in Morgan Co., Ind., to Lizzie Radar, born March 4, 1836; has one child--Isaac J., born Feb. 10, 1862. His father was born in Pennsylvania June 2, 1779, died Sept. 15, 1868; his mother was born in Virginia Aug. 10, 1789, died Sept. 30, 1856; they were married June 17, 1824. RAWNSLEY, JOSEPH, P.O. RICHARDSON, DANIEL W. (deceased); born in this Co., Nov. 13, 1837; son of Daniel, b. March 27, 1808; d. Aug. 20, 1860, and Dorcas Barker, b. Oct. 27, 1804, d. June 25, 1876; married Sept. 24, 1829. Married Jan. 1, 1860, to Mary Ann Carter, b. Oct. 10, 1840, in this Co.; her father, James M., b. Jan. 28, 1815; mother, Jemima Ward, b. The subject of this sketch was born in Chatham Co., N.C., 11 17, 1808. Settled on Sec. 29, in this township, 10 6, 1830. Was first married in Chatham Co., N.C., 10 4, 1829, to Mary Hadley, by whom he had nine children; she died 12 16, 1850; 3 23, 1852, he married Eleanor Lindley, at "White Lick" Meeting House, Morgan Co., Ind.; three children by this marriage; her father, James Lindley, born 4 19, 1774, died 1854; her mother, Eleanor Thompson-Lindley born 2 1779, died 1851; they were married 11 1796. Names of children as follows: Cyrus, born 11 12, 1830; George F., born 12 29, 1831; Zeno, born 1 24, 1834, died 11 8, 1864; Thomas, born 11 29, 1835; Job, born 10 17, 1838; William, born 9 13, 1840, died 7 4, 1842; Solon R., b. 6 2, 1843; Addison E., b. 3 5, 1846; Moses E., b. 6 18, 1848; Mary E., b. 6 8, 1851; Nancy J., b. 2 16, 1856, died 4 13 1856; James H., b. 1 20, 1860. Mr. Rogers, also raised two children belonging to a sister--Winship G. Cloud, born 12 29, 1822, died 3 10, 1841, and Sarah Cloud, born 7 16 1827, died 11 7, 1877. SCOTT, JAMES K., P.O. Clayton; Farmer, Sec. 17; born in this county Nov. 12, 1844. Married Nov. 12, 1863, to Emily Johnson; married again April 3, 1867, to Sarah M. Smith, b. June 10, 1849. Her father, Harrison Smith, was b. in Tennessee Jan 10, 1801, d. Feb. 17, 1863. Her mother was Priscilla Johnson, b. Sept. 25, 1818, is still living. They were married Nov. 15, 1835. Mr. Scott had one child by his first wife and four by his second--Anna, b. April 3, 1865; Pomeroy, b. Aug. 4, 1868; Jeffie, b. Sept. 6, 1871, d. May 11, 1872; Everna, June 3, 1873, and Addie, b. Nov. 3, 1875. Tandy Scott (father of James K.) was born in Virginia May 7, 1810, d. March 11, 1875; was married Sept. 29, 1829, to Amy Arnell, b. in Tennessee June 24, 1807, d. Sept. 10, 1865. Mr. Scott went to Tennessee when a boy, moved to Hendricks Co. in 1831, and died on the farm where his son lives. SHAW, ELIJAH J., P.O. Center Valley; Farmer, Sec. 33; born in Morgan Co., Nov. 28, 1842; settled on his present farm in 1868; son of Aaron Shaw and Jane Johnson. Married Oct. 2, 1866, to Ruth A., b. July 2, 1844; daughter of Joseph Rawnsley, b. June 30, 1809, and Mary Lindley, b. Jan. 29, 1813, died Oct. 18, 1865. Two children--Arthur J., b. July 8, 1870, and Bertha M., b. Jan. 31, 1877. Aaron Shaw (father of Elijah J.) was born in North Carolina, Dec. 16, 1809; Jane, his wife, was born July 27, 1810; they were married Sept. 23, 1830; settled in Morgan Co., Ind., in 1833; moved to Hendricks Co. in 1861. Mrs. Shaw died June 3, 1858, and he was married again Aug. 1, 1860, to Sarah Cox; she died April 17, 1864; married again April 1, 1866, to Jane Wilson. STOUT, WM. H., P.O. Centre Valley; Farmer, Sec. 28; born here Sept. 15, 1849; son of Samuel Stout and Millie D. Estes; settled in this county in 1837; his father was born in North Carolina about 1800, d. Oct. 4, 1875; his mother was born in Aug. 1817, is still living. William H. was married March 21, 1772, to Martha M. Curtis, b. March 28, 1853; they have one child, Calvin C., born Feb. 13, 1873. Mr. Benjamin Tont and son William enlisted in the 79th I.V.I., war of rebellion; William died at Nashville. George W. was in the 117th regiment, I.V.I., and died in Knoxville, Tenn. April, 1853; settled in Henry Co., 1827; Marion Co., 1829. D.H. Watts was married Jan. 22, 1853, to Zurilda Roberts, b. Shelby Co., Ky., Dec. 25, 1835. Seven children--Harmon, b. Jan. 21, 1854, d. Jan. 28, 1854; William H., b. May 6, 1857; Charles, b. Oct. 15, 1864; Sample, b. April 9, 1864; Cora, b. Jan. 22, 1867; Dora, b. Aug. 4, 1869; Squire, b. June 19, 1874. WEESNER, JABIN, P.O. Clayton; Sec. 27; Born 2 24, 1830 in North Carolina; settled in Liberty Tp., on Sec. 27, in the year 1870. Was married 10 21, 1852, at Sugar Grove, Hendricks Co., Ind., to Sophia Morgan; five children--Rachel A., born 1 28, 1854; William M., b. 7 11, 1856; Sarah J., b. 5 13, 1858; Oscar K., b. 3 11, 1864; Harris Fleece, b. 10 27, 1872. The first four were born in Morgan Co., Ind.; the last one in this county. Mr. Weesner's father was born in Stokes Co., North Carolina, 8 1, 1791; mother, Rachel Moon, was born in North Carolina, 5 11, 1794; died 1 5, 1861. Mrs. Weesner was born 7 21, 1828, in Blount Co., Tenn.; her father, Obadiah Morgan, was born in North Carolina, 2 6, 1796; her mother, Ann Jones, was born 7 21, 1803, in Blount Co., Tenn. WILLS, AMOS S., P.O. Clayton; J.P., son of Michael Wills and Elizabeth Darnall, both natives of Maryland; was born Jan. 1, 1809, in Montgomery Co., Ky., and settled on Sec. 33 of this township Sept. 15, 1831. He served as Justice of the Peace for twenty-five years. He married May 12, 1831, in Montgomery Co., Ky., to Lucinda D. Tatman; thirteen children, viz.: James L., born Feb. 12, 1834; George W., b. Jan. 7, 1836; d. May 16, 1837; John W., born Nov. 25, 1837; Elizabeth A., May 2, 1840; Eldridge C., July 31, 1842; Nancy J., Nov. 7, 1844; Allen T., April 15, 1847; Henry H., born May 21, 1849, died July 12, 1851; Parker, born June 28, 1851, died July 25, 1870; Mary R., b. Clayton; Farmer; son of Richard Worrel and Jane Snodgrass; born April 20, 1832, in Harrison Co., Ky; settled on Sec. 3, Liberty Township, with his parents, in 1840. Married in Liberty Township, Jan. 12, 1860, to Lucinda E. Shirley, and has three children--Albert H., born Dec. 17, 1860; Ella F., Dec. 21, 1862; Charley B., June 16, 1864. His father was born in Harrison Co., Ky., June 25, 1795, and is still living. The mother was also born in Harrison Co., Ky., Jan. 14, 1799, and died Feb. 24, 1870. Mrs. Worrell was born Feb. 20, 1832; her father, William Shirley, was born March 7, 1806, in Harrison Co., Ky., and is still living. Her mother, Mary, was born Jan. 30, 1805; married Dec. 13, 1829, and died Feb. 12, 1874. YORK, NATHAN, P.O. Center Valley; Farmer, Sec. 22; settled in this county in 1830; born in Randolph Co., N.C., Aug. 29, 1820; son of Barney York and Nancy Kivet; b. April 2, 1799, d. May 2, 1878. Was married Dec. 22, 1844 to Rebecca Fogleman--born Jan. 26, 1826; died April 23, 1876. Her father, Samuel Fogleman, b. April 5, 1801; d. Feb. 1866. Her mother, Polly, b. Nov. 18, 1803; d. Sept., 1874. Nathan had twelve children--Francis M., b. Sept. 8, 1845; Amanda Richardson, b. Nov. 25, 1847; Martha, b. Dec. 9, 1849; Asbury, b. Nov. 15, 1851; Sylvester, b.
