Avon; Farmer, Sec. 14; born in Ohio, Jan. 24, 1824; daughter of Elijah and Margaret Weer, who settled in this county, 1834. Married March 5, 1840, to James Almond, who died Aug. 23, 1872; ten children--Enos, David, Granville, Hiram, Jane, Rebecca, John, Harlan, Emma and Alva, who died Dec. 22, 1871. APPLEGATE, MILTON B., deceased, was born in Preble Co., Ohio, Aug. 22, 1822. In March, 1846, he married Margaret Harris, daughter of William and Nancy Harris, of Butler Co., Ohio; she was born Aug. 19, 1824. After their marriage, they moved to Clarksburg, Ind., where Mr. Applegate engaged in carriage making; he then moved back to Ohio and remained there until 1858, when he located the present home of his widow, in Washington Tp., Hendricks Co. Ind., where he followed farming until his decease, Sept. 12, 1874. By their marriage there were born the following children: John W., who died in infancy; Alice Louisa, died in infancy; Inez Bell (now Mrs. H. C. Gamble), Mary Minnie (now Mrs. Fletcher Carter), and William F. Applegate. Mr. Applegate was a prominent member and zealous worker in the Methodist Church, and died in the full assurance of faith. He had accumulated over 200 acres of good land, besides valuable property in Indianapolis. He did all he could to give his children a good liberal education, and left them all in good comfortable circumstances. BARKER, ROBERT J., P.O. Bridgeport; Farmer, Sec. 17; settled here in 1849; born in Hardy Co., Va., Oct. 19, 1817; son of George Bradford and Elizabeth Shell. Married Jan. 6, 1842, to Sarah Hawkins; nine children--Mrs. Susanna Parnell, Mrs. Elizabeth Compton (died in 1864), Charity Ann (died in infancy), Mrs. Mary J. Newby (died July 29, 1877), Layton M., Isaac H., Eli J. (died in 1874), Jehu H. and John H. BRANSON, JONATHAN E., son of Aquilla Branson, born in 1801, 4 9, and Lydia Ellis- Branson, born 1 13, 1803; married in 1825 in Belmont Co., Ohio, and moved to Vermilion Co., Ill., where they lived until her death, 12 10, 1863; his death occurred in 1867, 1, 12. His grandparents were natives of Virginia, Isaac and Jane Branson, who located, lived and died in Ohio. Jonathan E. was born in Belmont Co., Ohio, 3, 14, 1828, and married Rachel Furnas 11, 23, 1854, at the Friends' M.H., near Bridgeport, Ind.; three children have been born--Laura E., wife of W.W. Matturn, born 12 4, 1856; Mary C., born 12 9, 1860, d. 10 26, 1862, and John A. Branson, born 12 26, 1864. Rachel Branson, daughter of John Furnas, born 3 6, 1801, and Mary C. Furnas (maiden Little), born 11 10, 1801, both in Ohio, were married in 1821 and settled in Marion Co., Ind., near what is now Bridgeport, in 1823, in the dense, unbroken forest. Their parents, Robert Furnas and Joseph Little, helped with their teams to move them from Ohio through roadless woods to their land, helped split boards to cover the goods taken from the unloaded, returning wagons, stayed over one night and then left for home. Here, in the wilderness, Rachel Branson was born 2 4, 1827. Her father died 1 1, 1846. Her mother afterward became the wife of John Owens, and died 9 10, 1866. Jonathan E. and Rachel Branson located their present beautiful home in 1865. All are members of Friends' Society, while Jonathan is a preacher among them. EAKER, JOHN W., P.O. Avon; Farmer, Sec. 5; born in this county Dec. 24, 1858; son of William D. Eaker, d. 1866, and Elmina Clark, d. 1877, who settled here in 1852; came from Ohio. Wm. N.C. 1769; settled in this county in 1834. Married 10 6, 1831, to Beulah Perkins. Married again 4 12, 1848, to Mrs. Abigail Ballinger, died Jan. 1875 (maiden name Stanley). Married again 12 30, 1869, to Mrs. Annie R. Kemp (maiden name Reynolds). Avon; Farmer, Sec. 7; settled here in 1862; born in Monongalia Co., W. Va., April 21, 1819; son of Charles, b. in Washington Co., Penn., June 8, 1786, and Jemima Reed, b. in Va., 1791; parents settled here in 1872. Married Feb. 6, 1844, to Margaret J. Freeland; married again, Sept. 21, 1856, to Louisa Holton; married again Oct. 24, 1867, to Elizabeth Van Ansdall; seven children--Mrs. Eliza Jane Winnings, Charlotte E., died in May, 1860; Francis N., Jemima L., Charles S., James O.; died April 7, 1871; Rebecca Ann, died Jan. 26, 1877. FREELAND, G., P.O. Avon; Farmer, Sec. 26; settled here in 1871; born in Butler Co., Ohio, July 6, 1845; son of James Freeland and Margaret Reese. E., son of Enoch Hadley; was born in Chatham Co., North Carolina, Nov. 25, 1815; came to Morgan Co., Ind., 1826, when the county was in a wild state; hardly any neighbors but Indians. Was married Jan. 10, 1839, to Sina, daughter of James T. Hadley, born in N.C., June 6, 1817; came here in the Fall of 1825; died May 5, 1876. They were members of the Society of Friends. Married in May, 1817, to Susanna Brock; married again in August, 1845, to Jane Mills; married again, April 17, 1867, to Edith Esperson; children--Mrs. Ruth Walker, Isaac, Mrs. Sarah Bradford, Mrs. Charity Reagen, Mrs. Dinah Stanton (died in 1873), Eli and James W. HAWKINS, LAYTON, P.O. Clermont; Farmer and Broom Maker; settled on Sec. 18 in 1854; born in Marion Co., Ind., 10 24, 1824; son of Jesse, b. in S.C., in 1796, and Mary Jay, b. in S.C. in 1800. Married 2 21, 1849, to Rebecca Kinworthy; five children--Jesse, died in infancy; Robert, John, Mrs. Ann Jones and Jonathan. HERINGLAKE, HENRY C., P.O. Avon; Farmer, Sec. 14; born in Indianapolis April 20, 1845; son of Henry C. and Wilhelmina Stoelting, natives of Germany, and settled here in 1852. Married Dec. 23, 1870, to Rebecca J. Ross; four children--Charles A., Ernest E., Lillian M. and Lou B. HOADLEY, ABRAM, P.O. Plainfield; Farmer and Stock Raiser, Sec. 16; born in this county, Dec. 28, 1844; son of Abram, born in New Haven Co., Conn., 1794, and Sophia Staley-Hoadley, born in N.C., in 1805. Married May 25, 1869, to Mattie, daughter of Wm. E. and Sina Hadley, born June 18, 1814; four children--Willie O., Carl D., Conard V. and Clarence Virgil. Abram and his wife are consistent members of the M.E. Church. He is building a fine brick residence, as seen in view. HORNADAY, A.D., P.O. Avon; Farmer, Sec. 14; settled here in 1865; born in Rush Co., Ind., May 4, 1828; son of Jonathan, b. in N.C., Nov. 1791, and Hettie Brown, b. in N.J., 1792. Married Nov. 25, 1858, to Sarah Hanna; six children--Hettie Ella, died in infancy; James P., Charles P., Wm. D., Mary, and John died in infancy. HORNADAY, S.M., P.O. Plainfield; Farmer, Sec. 21; born in this county, Dec. 21, 1835; son of Ezekiel, b. in N.C. Dec. 3, 1795, and Mary Fall, b. in N.C. Oct. 10, 1795, who settled here in 1823. Married March 1, 1860, to Ruth Ann Martin; six children--Elmer E., Wilda, U. S. Grant, Clara, Lulu and Annie. HURON, SETH T., P.O. Avon; Farmer and Teacher, Sec. 2; born in this county, June 26, 1850; son of B.A. Huron, b. in Warren Co., O., Dec. 31, 1811, and Catherine Harding, b. in Ky., Aug. 2, 1815; settled here in 1833. Married Aug. 2, 1876, to Mary E. Farmer; one child--Mary E. JENKINS, LOTAN W., is son of John and Rebecca Worthington-Jenkins, natives of North Carolina; he was born March 28, 1798, and she, May 24, 1804, and married in Dec. of 1822, they immigrated to Indiana, locating upon a farm in 1833 in this township five years afterward, Mr. Jenkins purchased the farm now owned and worked by Lotan W. Jenkins, his son. The father deceased Sept. 18, 1842, leaving the care of the family and farm to Lotan W., he being the oldest member of the family, and born Nov. 3, 1823. He still continued upon the farm after his father's demise, attending school, as opportunity favored, up to the year 1852, after which he, being aided by his younger brothers, taught in Winter time, and farmed in Summer. Mr. Jenkins enlisted Aug. 27, 1862, in Co. K, of the 72nd Regt. Ind. Vol. Infty., and served three years in the war of the Rebellion; at the battle of Chickamauga, Sept. 20, 1863, he was taken prisoner, and held till Nov. 19, 1864, when he was exchanged and joined his regiment; when peace was declared, he returned home and again took up the farm work. In Oct., 1870, Mr. Jenkins was elected County Clerk, for the term of four years, commencing July 26, 1872. Aug. 4, 1874, he was married to Sarah, daughter of Burr P. and Nancy Dennis, of Hendricks Co., who was born Aug. 12, 1844; one child, named David W., was born Aug. 4, 1876. After the expiration of his term of office, Mr. Jenkins moved back to his farm, since which he has erected one of the finest barns to be seen in the county. His mother, now past seventy-four years of age, makes her home with him. LOY, CORNELIUS, P.O. Bridgeport, Marion Co.; Farmer, Sec. 24; settled on Sec. 13, 1831; born in Montgomery Co., Ohio, Aug. 4, 1808; son of John Loy and Catherine Isley. Married Nov. 30, 1830, to Rachel Compton, b. in Warren Co., Ohio, Oct. 1, 1815; four children--John, Obadiah, d. Oct. 26, 1849; A.D.; Mrs. Mary A. Parnell. McCALMENT, DAVID F., P.O. Clermont, Marion Co.; Farmer, Sec. 32; settled on Sec. 7 in 1855; born Jan. 9, 1830; son of Wilson, b. in Butler Co., Ohio, in 1799, and Lydia Fausett, b. 1809, who settled in Marion Co. in 1823. Married April 8, 1858, to Savannah J. McClain, b. in Virginia, Feb., 1801, and Jane Palmer, who settled here in 1830. MERRITT, JOHN E., P.O. Avon; Farmer, Sec. 35; born here April 6, 1846; son of G.W. Merritt, born in Highland Co., Ohio, April 21, 1821, and Melvina Johnson, b. in Scott Co., Ky., Sept. 23, 1824; settled here in 1825. Married Dec. 24, 1871, to Celia C. Miller; two children--Virginia V. and Elizabeth M. MILHOUS, EMILY, P.O. Bridgeport; Farmer, Sec. 20; settled here in 1828; born in Ohio, 9 17, 1824; daughter of Henry Burnet and Sarah Horner. Married 1 25, 1843, to Thomas Milhous, who died 2 25, 1874; five children--John, David, Mrs. Elizabeth Ingling, Mary Ann (died 1858) and Dinah. MILLER, JOHN D., deceased, a native of Scott Co., Ky., was born March 10, 1805; in the same county Ann Barkley was born, Nov. 22, 1810. They were married Jan. 22, 1830; came to Indiana in 1831, and located their present home, purchasing eighty acres of land and building the house on Sec. 6. Mr. Miller went to work with a will and as he became able still purchased more land, until he owned nearly 500 acres. The names and dates of their children's births are as follows: Robert H., born March 2, 1831; Jacob S., March 11, 1833; Mary Jane, died in infancy; Martha E., Dec. 29, 1836; Joseph Cooper, Sept. 11, 1839, was killed at Mine Run battle, Nov. 30, 1863; James S., Aug. 24, 1841, served three years in 63rd Regt. Ind. V.I.; Hannah A., July 20, 1843; Meredith A., July 30, 1845, died March 15, 1867; Amanda E., Oct. 7, 1847; John W., March 27, 1849, died Oct. 22, 1870; Sarah Catherine, Dec. 17, 1851; Charles, Feb. 23, 1856. Mr. Miller was accidentally killed Aug. 22, 1859; he was assisting in felling a "bee tree," which in falling struck Mr. Miller with such force upon his head as to produce instant death.
