NEW CASTLE.

The county seat of Henry county, situated on the Columbus, Chicago & Indiana
Central railroad, and at the crossing of the road running from Connorsville to
Muncie, ninety-seven miles from Cincinnati and seventy-five from Indianapolis.
It has a population of about 2,400 and rapidly increasing. It is beautifully
laid out and contains many building of much architectural beauty, among which is
the court house just completed, at a cost of $115,000, which is one of the
finest public buildings in the State. Its design and arrangement are most
complete, each office being provided with large fire-proof vaults of the latest
and most approved construction for the filing and preservation of public papers,
etc. The court room, situated on the second floor, can not be surpassed in
arrangement and artistic effect. Much credit is due Mr. J. Hodges, the
architect, and Mr. M. F. Edwards, under whose supervision it has been erected.
New Castle contains five good churches, a good system of graded sceools [sic],
several manufacturing establishments, etc. The surrounding country is rich and
wealthy, and being tapped by well macademized roads adds much to the wealth and
prosperity of the place. It also has two weekly newspapers which are well
conducted and zealously working for the interests of the city.
