Atkisson, who, it is claimed, enlisted Jan. 25, 1865, and served as Pvt. in Co. "A" 148th Reg't Ind. Inf and was discharged at Nashville, Sept. 5, 1865. While serving in Co. A 148th Reg't Ind. he was disabled by diarrhoea at Nashville, Tenn - Summer of 1865 and was treated in hospitals of which the names, location, and dates of treatment are as follows: Regimental. Atkinson, a private of Company "A", 148th Regiment Indiana Voluteers was enrolled on the 25th Day of January, 1865, at Greensburg, Ind., 1 yr, and is reported on rolls to June 30, '65, present; July & Aug not on file; mustered out with Co., Sept 5, 1865, at Nashville, Tenn. Regt'l return for July '65 does not report him absent; Aug. '65 not on file. Co. Morning Reports show him March 7, '65, sick in Hosp'l, Nashville, Tenn.; March 12, '65 ret'd from Hosp'l. State of Indiana, County of Howard, SS: Personally appeared before me the undersigned, duly authorized to administer oaths within and for the County and State aforesaid James W. Atkisson who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is 70 years of age, and is a pensioner of the United States enrolled at the rate of $14 per month under Pension Certificate No. 405254. That he is the identical person who was enrolled about the 25 day of January 1865 a private in Co. A of the 148 Regiment of Indiana Vols. in the Civil War and was honorably discharged about the 5 day of September 1865. That he served at least ninety days in the Civil War and received a final honorable discharge; that he has not served in the military or naval service of the United States otherwise than as averred; that he relies on the official records to show the exact dates of enrollment and of discharge. That he was born on or about the 26 day of October 1841. That he makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension roll of the United States under the provisions of the Act of May 11, 1912, and any amendments thereof. He hereby appoints Edgar T. Gaddis, of Washington, D. C., his attorney to present this claim to the Bureau of Pensions, and to secure his pension under this Act. Brown, Probate Judge, in and for said County and State, do hereby certify, that I have examined the record of Births, found in an old Bible, which was exhibited to me on this 21st day of July, A.D. 1913; that the above and foregoing is a true, full and complete copy of the record of births, found in said bible, as aforesaid that the record shows no erasures of any kind although quite dim, and the New Testament part of said Bible, bears date of 1828 and was Stereotyped by James Conner for the American Bible Society. The front part of the Bible, proper, has been torn out, but the Bible and New Testament part are all bound in one book. The said record has the appearance of having been written many years ago.
