Resident here for many years. Funeral service for prominent attorney set for Wednesday afternoon. Burdge Hamilton Hurd, for many years an active attorney of this city, died late yesterday at his home, 505 Lincoln avenue, after a serious illness of three days started last Thursday when the weather became extremely hot. Mr. Hurd had been in poor health for several years, being forced by a break in health to abandon his law practice while he was prosecuting attorney. Mr. Hurd was born August 26, 1863, at Coesse, Ind. He attended common school in Whitley county and later took college work at Vinton college, Vinton, Iowa, and Cornell college at Mt. Vernon, Iowa. Later he was graduated from the Ann Arbor, Mich., school of law. From Ann Arbor he went to Parker, S.D., where he practiced law and became postmaster under Cleveland in his second administration. While a resident of Parker he was married to Miss Alice Penny thirty-nine years ago March 6. The family came to Huntington thirty years ago and Mr. Hurd took up the practice of law here. In Huntington Mr. Hurd was prominent in Democratic political circles. He served as a member of the city school board for several years, was president of the board of children's guardians for many years, was judge pro tem of the circuit court at times when Judge S.E. Cook was called out of the city, and served as special judge in many cases, both in this city and in surrounding circuits. Mr. Hurd was a prominent member and worker in the First Methodist church here for many years, serving as a member of the official board as a teacher in the Sunday school, as assistant superintendent of the Sunday school, and in various other capacities which required time and leadership. Surviving are the widow, four sons, three grandchildren, a sister, two half- sisters, two half-brothers and a step-brother. The sons are Leland S. Hurd, of Louisville, Ky.; Cato B. Hurd, of Washington, D.C.; Gerald M. Hurd and Cecil J. Hurd, the latter two of this city. The grandchildren are Alice Eileen Hurd of this city, and Bonnie May and Leland, Jr., of Louisville. Mrs. E.E. Kelsey, of this city, is the sister. The half-brothers and half-sisters are William Hurd, Charles Hurd, Mrs. Effie Nichols and Mrs. Florence Osborn, all of Iowa, and the step-brother is George Bare, also of Iowa. More distant relatives live in Whitley county. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:30 at the Methodist church with Dr. John F. Edwards, pastor, in charge. Dr. Frank E. Day of Minneapolis, Minn., former pastor here, is expected here Wednesday and probably will assist in the services. Interment will be at Mt. Hope.
