Barker, an aged and well known man of the city and county, died Saturday evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Francis Fulton, corner Henry and West Taylor streets. Mr. Barker was born October 25, 1831, and had lived in this county since 1844. The Barker homestead was located near the Greenwood church until thirteen years ago. Mr. Barker with his wife came to this city and took up their residence on Clark street, spending their declining years in quiet. Three years ago last October Mrs. Barker died. For a month Mr. Barker had been living at his daughter’s home. Mr. Barker was born in Wayne county, and emigrated to this county while a young man. In the gold excitement in California four years later Mr. Barker made a trip overland to the coast, and gained a snug fortune in the fine yellow dust. He returned to Indiana, and on February 22, 1856 he claimed Miss Mary Cochran as his bride. They were parents of seven children, three of whom, Angeline, Della and Lillian are deceased. The four children surviving are Mrs. Fulton and F. M. and T. M. Barker of Huntington, and James Barker who lives in Denver. A sister is Mrs. Hannah Dungan and Mrs. Mary Ann Wilson of Bunker Hill is a half-sister. There are eight grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Funeral services and burial were conducted this afternoon, the cortege leaving the residence at 2:30 and going to the Pleasant Grove church where services were conducted by Rev. C. A. Love of Marion. Interment was at Greenwood. Additional Comments: [Transcriber’s notes: The name on Thomas’ headstone is “Thomas K. Barker. His probate notice also notes his name as Thomas K., so I believe this article is in error.
