Thomas Payne Cordell. Bro Cordell was born Fredericks Co, Virginia, Jan 15, 1802. He leaves an Aged companion & 7 children- 3 boys & 4 girls, to mourn him. (Fri., April 15-DL) Thomas P. Cordell married Catherine Waters, 20 Feb 1824, Shenandoah Co, Virginia. Catherine was born 5-4-1807, died 9-4-1891, Jackson Co., Ind., and is buried with Thomas at the Freetown Cemetery in Jackson Co.. Thomas and his wife moved to Jackson Co, about 1852, buying 80 acres of government land, 1 1/2 miles east of Freetown, Indiana. Thomas worked at Honeytown, for C.L.Dunhams and walked five to six miles a day, each way, to work. Catherine's letter left to their daughter, Lucinda, said "where the first son of thirteen children were born to them in Ohio". William Cordell, born 1828, Monroe Co, Ohio, married Matilda Moore. Rebecca, born 4-23-1831, is buried in the Old Freetown Cem. Catherine Cordell, born 1832, Ohio, married John Scott. Sarah Cordell, born 1833, married the minister Wilson L. Boston. They had six children.Lucinda Cordell, born 5-5-1836, Ohio, married Samuel Larswood Bush Moore, 9-3-1853, in Nashville, Brown Co., Ind. They had ten children.Margaret Elizabeth Cordell, born 1838, married George W. Hughes, 10-19-1862, Brown Co, Ind. Mary Cordell, born 1841, married William Golden, 4-10-1858, Jackson Co., Ind. George Washington Cordell, born 10-18-1844, married Rebecca Jane Hughes, 12-23-1863, Jackson Co., Ind.They had eight children.Eliza Ellen Cordell, born 1-1-1847, married Levi Morton Cross, 10-15-1865. They had five children. Levi ran a general store and was the postmaster in Freetown, Ind., in 1882. The youngest child of Thomas P. and Catherine was Tobias Cordell, born 1850, Monroe Co, Ohio. Tobias married first to Amanda M. Shipley, 11 Feb 1876. Two children were born to them, Nora Melvina, and John Thomas Cordell. Second he married Mary Canzada Shortridge, 23 July 1881, Jackson Co., Ind., and 3 children were born to them, Charles Wesley, Pearl May, and Edgar Cordell. Tobias died 1888, Jackson Co, Ind., at the age of 38. He is buried at the Liberty Church Cemetery in Norman, Ind., in an unmarked grave.
