Clyde Hill Goes Down After Saving Fishing Companion
Boat Capsizes In Scottsburg Lake Sunday
Local Man Saved Paul Fox, Scottsburg, But Disappeared As Fox Was Taken To Shore

A Seymour city fireman drowned about 2:15 o'clock Sunday afternoon in a lake 
just(sic) and west of Scottsburg after he was credited with saving the life of 
a fishing companion, who could not swim, after the boat in which the two were 
riding capsized.

Clyde Merrill Hill, 28, 314 West Eighth Street, apparently fatigued from his 
efforts to save Paul Fox, 38, 265 South Gardener Street, Scottsburg, sank 
shortly after Neal Surber, of Austin, had met the two in the water and was 
taking Fox safely to the bank. Hill's body was recovered about half an hour 
later.

Fund at Fire Station
So many contributions have been received in a box which started as a flower 
fund at the Seymour Fire Department that fellow city firemen of Clyde M. Hill, 
28, drowned while saving the life of another Sunday afternoon, say they will 
give the fund to Mr. Hill's wife and son.
Anyone wishing to donate to the fund, city firemen said, may do so at the fire 
department.

According to the report of investigating authorities, Hill and Fox were 
fishing in a small boat about 100 feet from the lake shore when the boat 
capsized, throwing them into the water. Hill attempted to save Fox, who could 
not swim, and Surber, who was standing on the bank, started swimming to assist 
him. Surber met them about half way to the bank and took Fox on to the bank. 
Hill apparently became fatigued, the authorities said, and disappeared some 
distance off shore before Surber reached the bank with Fox.

Fox was taken to Napper's Clinic at Scottsburg and is expected to recover from 
the effects of his near-drowning.

The Seymour State Police Post was notified and troopers took the police boat 
and equipment to the scene but the body was recovered about 2:45 o'clock 
before their arrival at the lake. The investigation and dragging operations 
were in charge of Trooper George M. Loy, of the Seymour Post, assisted by 
personnel of the Scott County Sheriff's Office, Scottsburg City Police and H. 
N. Stewart, Scottsburg, Coroner of Scott County.

Funeral Wednesday
Funeral services for Mr. Hill will be conducted at 1:30 o'clock Wednesday 
afternoon from the Voss Mortuary and at 2 o'clock from the First Church of the 
Nazarene with the Rev. Leo Darnell, of Flordia, former pastor, and, the Rev. 
Roy M. Vaughn, present pastor, in charge. Burial in Riverview Cemetery. 
Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct services. Friends may call at the Voss 
Mortuary after 7 o'clock tonight.

Mr. Hill had been a member of the Seymour City Fire Department for two years, 
four and one-half months, having joined the department January 1, 1954. He was 
a carpenter with his father, Stanley D. Hill, prior to becoming a city 
fireman, and was a veteran of the Pacific Theater in World War II, having 
served with the U.S. Army. He was a member of a Nazarene church and was widely 
known and highly respected by a host of friends who mourn his tragic death. He 
was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Hill was born August 15, 1927, in Seymour, the son of Stanley D. and 
Foster L. Silence Hill, who survive. He spent his entire life in this city and 
was married December 14, 1947, in Seymour to Jewell Meadows, who survives.

Besides the widow and parents, he is survived by a son, Michael Van Hill, at 
home and two brothers: Thomas M. Hill, of Seymour, and PR2 James L. Hill, 
serving with the U.S. Navy at El Centro, California.
