Obituary for Charles Wesley Thompson, Date of death – 17 May 1908

 

Obituary: Charles Wesley Thompson, son of Andrew and Eliza Thompson, was born 
in Lawrence County, Ind, May 26, 1838; died at his home in Houston, Sunday, 
May 17, 1908, at 3:40 o’clock a. m. aged 69 years, 11 months and 21 days. He 
was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Cornett April 7th, 1859. To this 
union were born six children – four boys and two girls – two of whom, Mrs. 
Henry M. Lutes and Mrs. John M. Bowman, preceded him to the grave. His 
surviving children are: Walter, Hamlin, Charles and David. He is also survived 
by fourteen grandchildren, and two great grand children. He had eight brothers 
and three sisters, all of whom are deceased except Andrew F., Asbury and 
Dally. He served his country in the Civil War, being a member of Company H. 
50th Ind. Vols. He was a member of the M. E. church since early life.

   He served as township trustee and assessor of his township, but for a 
number of years passed practiced law and was a member of the Jackson County 
Bar. Deceased was one of Salt Creek township’s most prominent citizens and was 
well known in this and adjoining counties. The bereaved relatives have the 
sympathy of  many friends in their sorrow. The funeral services, which were 
largely attended, were conducted at the M. E. church by Rev. Jacob White, 
after which the remains were laid to rest in Houston cemetery Monday, May 25.
