Thursday, Nov 23, 1933 LOU UTTERBACK TRAIN VICTIM INSTANTLY KILLED IN McDOEL YARDS AT BLOOMINGTON TODAY RITES SATURDAY Body Will Be Interred In Green Hill Cemetery In Bedford Following Services At Home ------- Louis A. Utterback, 66 years old, section foreman on the Monon railroad with residence at 212 South Madison street, Bloomington, was killed instantly at 7:20 o’clock this morning in the south end of McDoel Yards at Bloomington, where he was directing operations of a section gang engaged in track repair work. A switch engine attached to a single freight car and caboose passed over his body, severing both legs below the knee and inflicting head injuries. C. K. Koontz, southern division roadmaster, who hurried to Bloomington on learning of the accident, to investigate, told The Times this afternoon that the section crew had removed a broken rail from one of the tracks in the yard, loaded it on a push cart and were taking it to a pile of discarded rails. Mr. Utterback was following the push cart and was walking in the center of track fifteen, adjoining the track over which the push cart was being operated with his back to the approaching engine. Members of the section crew attempted to warn Mr. Utterback of the approach of the switch engine, which was backing south on track fifteen, but were unable to make him comprehend their signals and he was struck by the engine just as he was stepping across one of the rails in the track. His body was dragged three or four hundred feet, Mr. Koontz was advised, before members of the engine crew became aware of the accident and the engineer stopped the engine. Following the accident the Monroe county coroner was notified and said he would open an inquest at the Day Funeral Home at 4 o’clock this afternoon, where the body was removed for burial preparation. Funeral services will be held at the residence at 1:30 o’clock Saturday afternoon and the body will be brought to Bedford for burial in the Green Hill cemetery. Mr. Utterback is survived by the widow, Mrs. Ella Utterback and one son, Roy, at home. The family lived in Bedford for a number of years and Mr. Utterback was employed here as a Monon section foreman. He accepted a position with the Illinois Central Railroad Company in 1913 and removed from Bedford, returning to the employe of the Monon in 1922, since which time he has resided in Bloomington. He has several relatives residing in Bedford.
