RENSSELAER.

The capital of Jasper county, situated on the Iroquois river, sixteen miles from
Bradford, its nearest railroad station, on the Louisville, New Albany & Chicago
railroad. It was settled in 1839 by Gen. James Van Rensselaer, and now has a
population of about 1,000. It contains a fine brick court house, three churches,
an excellent school house, a weekly newspaper, a bank, and various stores and
shops.
