So far as is known there were no witnesses to the fatal shooting. Patrick died at the county hospital here at ten o'clock Sunday night. Archie Patrick, 21, no relation to the dead man, or at least who had disclaimed relationship with him, is being sought in connection with the fatal shooting. The shot that led to death was the aftermath of a quarrel that developed between the Frank Patrick and Ben Patrick families six weeks ago when Frank Patrick was first accused of being too friendly with Mrs. Grover McClurg, widow of three months and sister of Archie, alleged murderer. The quarrel reached a crisis Saturday afternoon when Frank Patrick and his alleged slayer met at the Cavendish store. Frank Patrick is said to have been sitting on a box in front of the store when Archie Patrick came by. An argument presumably quickly developed between the men over Mrs. McClurg. There were no known witnesses to the fatal shooting, but from the evidence which Sheriff Rouse gathered at the scene of the crime it is supposed that when the argument reached a heated stage the elder Patrick walked to the side of the store and got an automobile jack with which to defend himself. When he returned to the front of the store with the weapon he was fired upon by young Patrick. The automobile jack was on the ground by the wounded man's side when residents of the vicinity reached him. It was recalled that the automobile jack had been lying on the ground at the side of the store for several days prior to the shooting. The details of the crime given here are subject to change, but it is believed they are approximately correct. .....Alleged Killer Flees..... After firing the fatal shot Patrick fled from the scene. What route he traveled after fleeing is not definitely known, but it is thought that he went to his father's home and recited the details of the crime. Sheriff Rouse has talked with Ben Patrick since the shooting, but at this time the nature of their conversation will not be divulged. The father of the alleged killer promised to deliver him to the authorities today, but it does not appear likely that he will be able to do so, as Patrick very likely has left Indiana. Whether Patrick fired in self-defense for fear he was going to be struck by the jack allegedly held by the elder Patrick or whether he wantonly slew him of course has not been determined. .....Woman Cause..... According to the information we have been able to gather, Frank Patrick had been overly friendly with Mrs. Grover McClurg for several weeks, or since after the death of her husband. Whether she encouraged the friendliness the Republican does not profess to know, but it is known that the two families had been quarreling because of Patrick's advances toward the woman. About six weeks or more ago the Frank Patrick and Ben Patrick families engaged in a general quarrel which resulted in their being haled before a justice of the peace in Barkley township. Patrick was accused by Mrs. McClurg's relatives of conduct un- becoming a married man and a lively quarrel ensued in the justice court. During the hearing it is said that Mrs. Frank Patrick became bitter toward her husband, whereupon he challenged her to tell the court what became of her first husband with whom she lived in Kentucky. She is said to have replied: "He fell into a cistern." Patrick then said: "Yes , but you pushed him in." .....Creates Little Excitement..... The onion colony, made up of Kentuckians, apparently is only mildly interested in the shooting. They accepted it in their typical stoical way and today busied themselves in their fields as though nothing unusual had taken place. Sheriff Rouse was not informed of the shooting until almost two hours after it had taken place, as the main telephone line between this city and Newland was out temporarily. With Deputy Prouty he visited the scene of the shooting and began to take up Patrick's trail from there. However, he was met with the usual shoulder shrug whenever he attempted to gain information concerning Archie Patrick's where- about. It is supposed that the alleged killer immediately left Newland by automobile for some railroad point and fled from the state. There is a possibility that he may be in hiding in the onion country, but if he is, that will not help the authorities much, as wanted men in the Newland country are hard to locate. Frank Patrick had lived in the Newland vicinity for a number of years with his wife and six children. He, like practically all of the onion growers, came to this county from Kentucky, where he was a truck farmer. The Ben Patrick family likewise has lived in Newland for a number of years and all of them are said to have formed a violent dislike for Frank Patrick after he had allegedly begun to pay attention to a member of their family, an act which is decidedly in opposition to the Kentucky mountaineer's code of ethics regarding their "women folks". Patrick's body was removed to a local undertaking establishment. Funeral services will be held from the Barkley church at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon.
