C. Chandler & Co.'s Business Directory For Indiana FRANKLIN. The county seat of Johnson county, is situated on the Jeffersonville, Madison & Indianapolis railroad, at the crossing of the Martinsville branch of the Indianapolis, Cincinnati & Lafayette railroad twenty miles from Indianapolis, sixty-six from Madison and eighty-eight from Jeffersonville. It was settled in 1822, about which time forty acres of land whereon the town, now stands was donated by George King, (who, was then the owner of some six hundred acres surrounding,) for the purpose of securing the county seat. This forty acres was laid out and sold by the county, and the title of nearly all the real estate there can be traced back to the county. The growth of the town has not been remarkable, since its present population does not exceed 2,500, but a steady class of business men have grown up with the place, and given it a substantial character. Within two years the increase of population and business has been considerable, and some handsome buildings are taking the places lately held by unsightly structures. Franklin contains six church organizations and five church edifices, an academy and a number of primary schools. It is also the seat of Franklin College, a Baptist institution, which is beautifully situated just east of the railroad in the midst of splendid grounds, which, with the college building, are estimated at the value of $60,000. Franklin has also a foundry, a large woolen factory, several flouring mills, a planing mill, a large hotel nearly completed in addition to several now in operation, and is surrounded by a good country, to and from which access is made easy by excellent gravel roads, five of which radiate from this point.
