Declaration For Widow's Pension
State of Indiana, County of Knox, SS:  

On this 7th day of March A.D. one thousand nine hundred and ten personally 
appeared before me Clerk Knox Circuit Court within and for the County and State 
aforesaid ELIZABETH CARDINAL aged 47 years, a resident of Johnson Township, 
County of Knox, State of Indiana who, being duly sworn according to law, makes 
the following declaration in order to obtain pension under the provisions of 
the ACT OF CONGRESS APPROVED APRIL 19, 1908. 

That she is the widow of JOSEPH CARDINAL who was enrolled under the name of 
Joseph Cardinal at Knox County, Indiana, on the 24th day of Sept., 1864 as a 
Private in Co. H. 44th. Regt. Ind. Vols., war Rebellion, and honorably 
discharged July 25th, 1865 having served ninety days or more during the late 
war of the rebellion.  That the soldier was not in the MILITARY OR NAVAL 
SERVICE of the United States except as stated above.

That she was married under the name of ELIZABETH CARRIE to said soldier at Knox 
County, Indiana, on the 20th day of Sept., 1876, by Rev. Father Gintz; that 
there was no legal barrier to the marriage; that she had not been previously 
married once before, but his former wife died in-on the 2nd, day of February, 
1875 or 1876.  

That the said soldier died March 1st., 1910 at Knox County, Indiana, that she 
was not divorced from him; that she had not remarried since his death.  That 
the NAMES and DATES OF BIRTH of all the children of the soldier, now living and 
under SIXTEEN YEARS OF AGE are as follows: 

BERTHA, born June 24th, 1894, at Knox Co., Ind. 
OLIVER, or ANTHONY OLIVER, born Aug. 19, 1897, at Knox Co., Ind.
BARBARA C., born Feb. 5th, 1900, at Knox Co., Ind.
ELIZABETH O., born March 24, 1902, at Knox Co., Ind.
CATHERINE A., born July 26, 1906, at Knox Co., Ind.

That she has not heretofore applied for pension -that soldier drew pension # 
446,111. Old law.

That she hereby appoints, with full power of substitution and revocation, --
James P.L. Weems of Vincennes, Indiana her true and lawful attorney to 
prosecute this claim, and directs that the sum of Ten Dollars be paid him for 
his services. That her Post Office address is R.D. 8, Box 67, Vincennes, County 
of Knox, State of Indiana.

Also personally appeared JAMES CARDINAL, residing at R.D. #4, Vincennes, 
Indiana and JAMES CARY, residing at R.D. #8, Box 62, Vincennes, Indiana, 
persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit, and who, being 
by me duly sworn, say that they were present and saw ELIZABETH CARDINAL the 
claimant, sign her name (or make her mark) to the foregoing declaration; that 
they have every reason to believe, from the appearance of said claimant and 
their acquaintance with her of 44 years and 40 years respectively, that she is 
the identical person she represents herself to be, and that they have no 
interest, direct or indirect, in the prosection of this claim.

Sworn to and subscribed before me this 7th day of March, 1910, A.D. and I do 
hereby certify that the contents of the foregoing declaration, &c., were fully 
made known and explained to the applicant and witnesses before swearing, 
including the words 8, 9 erased, and the words and that I have no interest, 
direct or indirect, in the prosecution of this claim.
