TOTH, Priest, 45 Dies East Chicago Pastor Spent Youth in South Bend Rev. Joseph
P. Toth, aged 45, pastor of Holy Trinity Roman Catholic church in East Chicago,
Ind., a former South Bend resident, died at 8:?5 o'clock Saturday evening of a
heart attack in the rectory of his church. He contracted a heart weakness after
an accident in Gary, Ind., two years ago, when an automobile in which he was
riding turned over. The body will be brought to South Bend at 3 o'clock Tuesday
afternoon .... The coffin will be layed in St. Stephen's Hungarian Roman
Catholic church here, the body lying there until the final solemn requiem mass
...Wednesday morning. Interment will be in Cedar Grove cemetery. The church
will remain open Tuesday until midnight. Father Toth was born in Kasdon,
Hungary on July 10, 1889 and came to this country with his parents .... He was
ordained a priest on June 20, 1915 and said his first mass at St. Stephen's
church (South Bend). His first assignment was pastorate of St. Emery's
(sic)(Emeric's) Roman Catholic church in Gary, where he served for 12 years.
The last eight years ... were in the East Chicago pastorate. Next June, Father
Toth would have been a preist 20 years. Surviving are the parents: Mr. and Mrs.
Joseph Toth of South Bend; Mrs. Paul Hirschler, South Bend ; and a brother,
Louis Toth, South Bend. Rev. Geza Gyofy, pastor of Our Lady of Hungary church
will be celebrant .... Rev. Joseph Sipos, pastor of St. Emery's (sic) church in
Gary, as deacon, and Rev. John Szabo ... as sub deacon. SOUTH BEND (Indiana)
