LAPORTE.

The capital of Laporte county, on the Michigan Southern & Northern Indiana
railroad, fifty-nine miles from Chicago and twelve from Michigan City. It is
surrounded by one of the richest and most productive regions of the State, the
principal portion being a rich undulating prairie, well watered by beautiful
lakes. The town is situated on the banks of Clear Lake, the most important of
them, which gives the city good sewerage and abundance of the best of water. It
was first settled in 1833, but during its existence has had many obstacles to
overcome, which, in the past years, did much toward retarding the growth of the
place; but these it has mostly outgrown, and now bids fair to be one of our
prominent cities. Its railroad facilities and its great advantages as a
manufacturing town are being improved with a will that means business. It has
some fine establishments already in operation. The most conclusive proof of its
high state of morals and advancement, is its numerous fine churches and its
perfected system of graded schools. There are two-weekly papers here, which are
ably conducted and are doing much toward building up the interests of their
city. The shops of the Michigan Southern & Northern Indiana railroad are located
here, which give employment to a large number of hands, as well as being a great
benefit to the place.
