MICHIGAN CITY.

In Laporte county, on the Michigan Central, and Louisville, New Albany & Chicago
railroads. It is situated at the southern extremity of Lake Michigan, and is the
only lake port of the State. The government has expended large sums of money in
constructing a harbor at this place, which, when finished, will be one of the
best on the lake. The Northern Prison buildings are located here, and
considerable manufacturing is done. It contains about 4500 inhabitants, and is
steadily increasing in wealth and population.
