    BEN FLATHERS, CIVIL WAR VET, ANSWERS TAPS

    Military honors were accorded Benjamin L. Flathers, Civil War veteran and
Woodbury county's oldest homesteader, at funeral services held for the venerable
pioneer at the old farmstead at Rock Branch, Thursday July 16 at 2:00 p.m.
Interment was made in the cemetery adjoining the church.

    Benjamin Lewis Flathers was born at Crawfordsville, Indiana, December 9,
1839. When about two years of age his parents moved east locating near Iron
Hill, Jackson County, Iowa. He lived at that place during his childhood and
young manhood, growing into the ways of agriculturist.

    On March 25, 1868 he was united in marriage to Miss Almira Frazier of
Maquoketa, Iowa, and they were then to move to the homestead seven miles west of
Correctionville, where he resided until his death on July 14, 1931.

    He was preceded in death by his wife, June 20, 1920, and also by one
daughter, Martha in June 1925. Surviving are four children, George and Dolly of
Rock Branch, Ed of Iroquois, South Dakota and Mrs. H. A. Wetmore of Sioux City,
and seven grandchildren, two greatgrandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Lydia Bowling
of Twin Lakes, Michigan and one brother, John of Jerome, Idaho.
