James Ritchie, aged eighty-six, an active minister in the Cumberland Presbyterian church for the past sixty-three years, died in this city last evening. He was born in Barren County, Kentucky, near Glasgow, June 18, 1804, and came to Indiana when quite young and began preaching as an itinerant at first, when he had ten counties in his district. He visited his charges in all kinds of weather on horseback, and became familiar with the hardships and sufferings of the early pioneers of this state. He was one of the founders of Lincoln university of Lincoln, Ill., and was the financial agent for that institution for a great many years. His death was caused by heart failure. Mr. Ritchie was mayor of Franklin during the war and his wife also taught school in this city.
