John Whetstine, aged 84 years, residing near Mt. Nebo church, this township, committed suicide Tuesday by hanging himself. He started out of the house Tuesday morning saying that he was going to commit suicide, but nothing was thought of this as he had often made the assertion before. He was found by a searching party Wednesday evening at 1 o’clock, hanging to a tree three quarters of a mile from his residence. The coroner was summoned from Martinsville, but he had gone to Wilber, and the squire was sent for in his absence, whose report showed that death came from strangulation by his own hand. The deceased had been living with his only daughter, Julia, for many years. Eli Whetstine, of Martinsville, was his only son. Mr. Whetstine was an early settler of this township. For the past few years he had been very feeble and nearly blind. This is thought to have preyed upon his mind until he became tired of life. The remains were interred at Mt. Nebo, the family burial ground, Thursday evening.
