JC BAUMGARTNER, of Jefferson Township, died last week. Jo GENTRY and JT ROBERTSON, of Ellettsville, were here yesterday. MV SADLER is selling many of the Wheeler and Wilson sewing machines. Dr. L WILLIAMS, of Louisville, departed for his home yesterday evening. Uncle Finley JOHNSON, who has been sick for some time, is able to be about now. SMITH Bros. have received their printing material and will get out a paper in a few weeks. Last week Dr. BELLES shipped by express a box of dry goods to his daughter in Paris, France. JD TRENT, of Freedom and EJ BARTON, of Arny in town Monday, and subscribed for The People. John LONG, prominent citizen of this county is about to remove to the northern part of this state. Mr. WAYLAND, the piscatorially inclined editor of the Journal, will go to Greene County on a fishing tour. The wife of Uncle Eli CLEVELAND has been suffering intensely for several days with a rising on her hand. Ben PHILLIPS is just in form Indianapolis, Richmond, Terre Haute and other places. He did not strike it “fat”. Thomas G. SPANGLER, Daniel GANTZ and Wm. RICHARDS, all young teachers, called on The People Saturday. Yesterday, AB THURMAN and Mary A CROTSH, both of Gosport were married at LUCUS’S home by Squire CULVER. Squire CULVER and wife returned this week from Indianapolis where they have been visiting for some time. JD LANHAM, the efficient agent of the I&V railroad at this place, has our thanks for the last issued time card of this road. Rolla HARRIS handles the brush quite artistically. He decorated our front with a hastily, but very well gotten up sign. State house quarry—I will run a hack to the stone quarry today in connection with my boat 20c round trip. GW MAYFIELD JM HARDEN and family of Arcola, Ills, have been visiting friends here for several days and will leave for their home tomorrow. Our genial, efficient and big hearted Postmaster JA COFFEY has displayed considerable energy and taste in his ornamentation of the post office. A huge arch is reared underneath which is the lettering: “All hail to the heroes of the nation!” Last week, in an article copied form the Indianapolis concerning the WAGNER- GLETCHER wedding B SWEITZER was misrepresented. He did not say that he made the law there referred to, but, in a jocular way, and purely to further the joke, said that such a law was in existence. Dr. Wallace ROBBINS would announce to suffering humanity that he is stopped at the Moore’s hotel, Spencer and remain until Oct 15. His specialty is the treatment of chronic diseases, viz: liver complaints, disordered blood, rheumatism, consumption, dyspepsia, derangement of the stomach, pile, office. Consultation free. Christopher CANTWELL, the plucky citizen of Montgomery Township was in town Monday and gave The People words of encouragement. At the State House Quarries, they have opened a new ledge, about two hundred yards above the old one, foreman KELLY informs us. About forty men are now at work. We are informed that last Saturday night a man by the name of COLE stole from Thomas BEECHER, of this county fifty bushels of wheat and attempted to haul the same to Brazil in the act of which he was caught, and lodge in jail at Brazil. Teacher’s Institute The School Teachers of Worthington Township met in the high school building at Spencer on October 4, to organize their township institute. GANTZ, Sec Word has just been received that Thomas SECRETS, who once lived here, and a brother of Jas SECRETS of this place was recently killed in Montgomery County, Kas, a man by the name of TRIPLET, being his murderer. From the paper given us which contains an incorrect report we can not determine for just what reason he was killed—most likely for money. Neither can we tell when the murder occurred. A detailed account will be given when over the facts are known. TRIPLET belonged to a band of cut throats, who are now in jail. Court Proceedings The following cases have been disposed of during the present term of court, up to date: State vs. Wm SHELBURN. Three cases-one for intoxication, and two for assault and battery with intent to murder. Plea of guilty in each case. Fined $2 in the first case and $25 and $40 in the 2d and 3d. The prosecuting Attorney entered nollies as to the intent. State vs. Grant KAY. Assault and battery and carrying a concealed weapons. Noile as to carrying concealed weapons. Plea of guilty as to assault and battery; fine $1. State vs. Wm. MARSH. Carrying concealed weapons; trial by court; fine $7.50. State vs. Jack HOSTELLER. Concealed weapons; plea of guilty, fine $5. State vs. Simon P CLARK. concealed weapons; trial by court; fine $15. State vs. Harrison BEAN. petit larceny; trial by court; fined $10, imprisonment in county jail 10 days and disfranchised 18 months. State vs. Michael SHOUK. Assault with intent to commit rape. Nolle. State vs. Charles PATTERSON. murder; nol. James PATTERSON who was tried at the October term 1878, convicted and sent for life to the penitentiary, for the murder of Anthony WHITE, appealed to the supreme court, which court reversed the decision of the court below, for the following reason: The instructions given by the court to the jury were erroneous. PATTERSON was ordered back to Owen County for further proceedings. State vs. Charles BEEM. Burglary and grand larceny; continued. State vs. Lou PARROTT for the murder of her father. J. BROWN, set for Monday. Change of venue from Morgan County. Civil docket very light. No cases of much importance have been tried. MCDONALD vs. Rolla HARRIS. Libel and slander. Continued Noel WILLIAMS has again resumed his position as clerk. Prosecutor PICKENS in on the sick list. Sheriff WOOD still uses crutches. Judge CLAYPOOL, OF Indianapolis, and Samuel CURTIS and James MCNUTT of Brazil, were in attendance at court on Tuesday. Mr. John BRANSTETTER, OF Gosport, was admitted to practice in the Owen circuit court. Major GRUBBS acted as judge on Tuesday.
