The Republicans of this county cannot afford to be without a paper and should encourage us by subscribing and urging their neighbors to.” 23 October 1879 Peter MILLER, of Denmark, was in town Saturday. On Wednesday, the 15th a child of M. P. HILL died. Dr. B.A. MCGEE, of Bloomington, was in town Monday Joseph GENTRY, Ellettsville druggist, spent Monday with us. A.G. TREADWAY, P.M at Cuba, was in Spencer Monday. Last week, Phil MILLER bought out Wm SNODGRASS, the grocer. Auditor FREELAND is doing some improving about his residence this week. Jesse WEIK, an attorney of Greencastle was here Tuesday on business. CARITS and FISHER warrant all work done at their grist mill and solicit custom grinding. Rev. T. D. WELKER, presiding elder, preached at the ME Church Sunday and Sunday night. Dr. Willard BRIDGES, of Jordan village, clever “old boy” was in town Saturday attending Medical Association meeting. Dr. SCHELL put down the first of the week a stone pavement in from of his new building. The south side of the square presents a good appearance. The stone for the new Presbyterian Church foundation is being hauled and word commenced. Mr. Calvin FLETCHER has the work under charge. Overstreet and Sons are now daily receiving immense piles of clothing which they are selling at lower prices than any one else can sell them. Judge HELLER has done away with the 11 o’clock liquor law, and Frank Fields says there is hopes of a Democratic sweep. The first of next month, Robert MCNAUGHT will go to Arkansas to spend the winter. W.L. DAGGY will perhaps go also, only to remain a short time, though. Last week, Charles BRANNON, a brakeman on a freight, was thrown from a car at State house stone quarry and injured painfully though not seriously. The car ran off the track and rattled things up considerably. A young man at Bloomington named Wm. GENTRY, jumped the fence with a large open knife in his pocket and fell on the same. He lies at the point of death. Last Friday, Jas. HANCOCK was arraigned before Squire CULVER at the instigation of Amanda E. FISHER, on a charge of bastardy. After two days’ investigation, he was bound over to court, under bond of $300 The Baptist Sunday School have inaugurated a series of socials which promise to be of interest. The first was held at Dr. COX’s residence Tuesday night. The next is to held at Wesley COFFEY’s Meetings will be held every two weeks. Tuesday evening a small son of Mr. PRATT, the blacksmith, had a silver quarter in his mouth, when accidentally it slipped down in his throat, lodging there, and he would have met an untimely death had not friend assisted him to dislodge it. The Owen County Medical Society met at the Presbyterian hall last Saturday, with Dr. BELLES in the chair, pro tempore…..Drs. WILES, SCHELL and PEARSON were appointed to read papers at the next meeting. Last Saturday night, about 12 o’clock some one unlocked the hall door which opens into the upper room of HARRIS’ store, and went down the stairway. Rolla Harris who was sleeping in the upper room hearing them, slipped to the door, fastening it so the thief could not unfasten it. Having no revolver, Mr. HARRIS was in a poor plight for making an attack and “taking time by the fore- top” went out the front way in a quest of others, but before he got back the pilferer made his way out. On Saturday week, at Bedford, John MCFARLAND, a horse trainer, killed with a pocket knife, Thomas MCCOOL, a quarryman. MCFARLAND was accompanying a young girl, when MCCOOL, with others, tried to take her away from him doubtless for a hellish purpose. The court has acquitted MCFARLAND. J.F. STEWART made a flying visit to Lancaster Tuesday. Mrs. HARRAH, of Pawnee, Nebraska, is visiting the family of S.A. HARRAH, near Whitehall. Emanuel HILL, of Monroe County, was thrown from a horse last week and instantly killed. Mrs. Jane FOSTER, wife of O.E. FOSTER, of White Hall, who was sometime ago badly hurt, is now visiting near Alton. Miss Josie CONSTABLE and Miss Emma BATTERTON, two of Gosport’s fairest young ladies spent last Sunday in this country. Mrs. Work FOSS, of this place has been confined to her bed for some time past with typhoid fever. Mr. SCHAEVEL has removed his butcher shop to the room formerly occupied by the Eli BENELL.
