The Republicans of this county cannot afford to be without a paper and should encourage us by subscribing and urging their neighbors to.” 20 November 1879 We are on the War Path with the largest and best selected stock of boots, shoes, and hats in Owen County. John NELSON, of Farmers station was in town yesterday. Frank LAWSON has a nice lot of Scott’s and Dickens’s novels. Last week and addition to the family of T.A. MCNAUGHT was made. Wanted—to rent a house of three rooms. Apply to J.W. COOPER. J.C. CULMER went to Indianapolis last week to remain several days. J.K. SMITH has a new boarder—just arrived—of the male persuasion. Eld. HOLT has been procured to preach for the Christian church at this place. Copies of Tennyson, Burns, Byron and Shakespeare at LAWSON’S drug store. Mr. MAAS, from Terra Haute, the well known and popular fancy goods man who has been in part supplying Spencer with Ladies’ Furnishing Goods has returned and is now stopping a the National house with a magnificent line of Ladies’ and children’s cloaks, dolmans, circulars, skirts, hosiery, and etc. Mr. MAAS will remain here only until Saturday morning so avail yourselves of the excellent goods in time. New pocketbooks at LAWSON’S. Rubber good by the case, bought before the big advance at BOSWELL’S. J.M. STEWART has about complete an addition to his house on market Street. Children’s toys and books at LAWSON’S drugs. CURTIS and FISHER warrant all work done at their grist mill, and solicit custom grinding. A.W. FULLERTON was at Bloomington attending to legal business Monday and Tuesday. Lawyers MULKY and DUNCAN of Bloomington, were in town Saturday on legal business. Eld. John HUTCHINSON, colored, of Vincennes, preached at the colored church here Sunday. Samuel P. EVANS of Atkinsonville, called The People last Saturday and left material aid to balance a year’s subscription. Just received a large stock of knobby hats also a fine lot of caps. T.H. BOSWELL and CO. The “Walker Book” just received. They are “A” No. 1. Call and get a pair. T.H. BOSWELL and CO. Lyman MANDEVILLE was arraigned before Squire CULVER last Friday, at the instigation of his former wife, charged with provoke. Fined five dollars. Dr. GORDON of this place, who has been an invalid for several years, received last Thursday form the Government pension money to the amount of $3,500. In the trial of EDWARDS vs. WALDENS, before Squire CULMER last Thursday, the jury returned a verdict for defendants. Plaintiff demanded ejection from lands recently purchased. Ms. BROWN living in the northeast part of town, attempted to catch a transom which the wind blew out last Monday and received several severe wounds on the hands by the breaking of glass. Albert COOK, of Dresden Tenn., one of the characters in the story of Daniel THORNTON now running in The People, writes us enclosing subscription, and says perhaps a club of subscribers will be raised. T.J. HARRIS has rented of Mr. TRAHOUN the store room on the north side formerly occupied by J.J. COOPER and Son, and will move his goods thereto— not, however, until the room has been arranged, shelved and etc. Will be done by ELLIS Brothers. Last Saturday, L.D. MORGAN was called to Mattoon, Illinois by telegram, where his mother was lying dangerously ill. Sunday morning, Mrs. MORGAN died, in the seventy-fifth year of her age, of paralysis. Her remains were interred in the city Monday. The first issue of The Free Press, James K. SMITH, editor and publisher, will be issued soon—probably next Saturday. It will be a bold and fearless advocate of the cause of the people, free and untrammeled by the entangling influences of official patronage. HUFF’S Drug, Southwest Public Square. Middletown Doings Dr. HESTER and his bride returned home Saturday. Last Saturday morning about 5 o’clock the residence of F.R. NUGENT was discovered to be on fire, and had it not been for the vigorous efforts of the citizens in and about town the house would have burned to the ground in a very short time. Several young ladies who were present deserve to be complimented for the willingness and dispatch with which they rendered aid in carrying water. Abyssinian water carriers are no comparison.
