"OBITUARY: THE CRAWFORDSVILLE JOURNAL - CRAWFORDSVILLE, IND. THURSDAY - AUGUST 23, 1906. Title: Death Of An Old Soldier William H. Elkins, an Old Soldier, who resides at Russelleville, died on Wednesday afternoon at the home of John Galey his son-in law, on Grace Street, in South Englewood, of paralysis, aged seventy years. He was visiting his son- in law when he took sick two weeks ago. He leaves a son and three daughters. The deceased was a retired farmer. He suffered his first attack a year ago while visiting his daughter here. The funeral party will leave here Friday morning and go to the home of Mr. Todd, another son- in law who resides a mile east of Russellville, where the funeral will be conducted at 10 o'clock by Rev. Elkins was born 01 March 1836 in Seymour, Jackson County, Indiana, and died 22 August 1906 in Englewood, Crawfordsville, Indiana. He was a direct descendant of William Elkins, the first pioneer of what is now Brown County (previously Jackson County), Indiana per the 1850 Census when he was a boy living with William's son Amayiah Elkins family at the time. His mother was Mary A. Reynolds. Corpl. William H. Elkins served with the Union Army in the War Between The States in the 149th Regiment, Indiana Volunteers, Co. I, Infantry in 1865. He also was the Indian agent for the Miami Tribes in Parke County, Turkey Run State Parke area for some years.
