Adams Cemetery Porter County, Indiana Adams Cemetery was a small, very old cemetery near a small, very old country church called Adams Church. Henry S. Adams of Jefferson Co., Ohio came to this region on the 27th of April, 1833 and in May erected a cabin and laid a claim of 160 acres on Sec. 9, Township 34, Range 5. He brought with him his wife, mother, and three daughters. His was the first house erected in the township. Morgan Township originated Aug., 1843 when it was set apart from Pleasant Township. Harriet J. Adams was the first person buried there. A small plat of about 1/4 acre, was set apart as a burying ground. In 1867 an acre was added to the ground. This was purchased with money raised by subscription among the people of the country around. The ground cost about $60 and was deeded to the county. Burial here is free except a fee of $2.50 which is charged upon each lot of 8 x 19 ft. for upkeep. The neighbors turned out in force and fenced the grounds. The information about Adams Cemetery came from an excerpt from the Porter Co. Library and a previous cemetery survey done in 1956. When I went to the cemetery to begin working there, I found the old church had been torn down and the site was under construction. The Adams Church was on 250 South. The old cemetery is at the corner of 250 South and 150 East in Morgan Township, Porter County. Off St. Rt. 49, turn E. on 250 South. I started in the S.E. corner which is the oldest, and worked my way around. The old headstones here are in very bad shape. Many are broken off, some just laying on the ground, and quite a few covered with a dark black stuff (for want of a better word). On many the engraved words are almost obliterated with the passage of time. I tried to do my best to decipher as much as I could. This area of Porter County was known as Tassinong, a name used by Potowatomie Indians and French fur trappers starting in the 1600's. There is a difference of opinion as to whether the Indians or the French gave it it's name. It was used on some of the early stones as the place of death.. I found a set of record books listing the burials in cemeteries from different areas of N. W. Indiana at the Porter County Library genealogy dept. after I finished my work in the cemetery. A reading on Adams Cemetery was done by Ed & Doris Brozak from Northwest Indiana Genealogical Society, September 22, 1992. It came in very helpful to fill in gaps on stones that I could barely read. They must have had early records to go by. This cemetery is well cared for and currently being used for new burials. Lots of new graves since the 1992 update. (7/8 mile east of Smoke Road) in Valparaiso, In. It is on the south side of 150 S. Just a short distance east of 75 E. It is very hard to see from the road because it is up on a hill with a fence around it. It is also very hard to get to. It was there in 1993, but not cared for. The following information was taken from previous records in the library and we are grateful for those records. "The 1876 map shows a church in SE 1/4 of sec. 12 and also there was a Meeting House. The church was called White's Methodist Faith Church. The following information was given by Mr. Allen J. White of Valparaiso, IN to Mrs. Josephus Blachly of the DAR, February, 1961. The following stones were in the cemetery." BROWN, ? dau of William Brown d. 12-8-1892 17 y's I found these in a set of compiled record books of cemetery burials at the Porter Co. Library. I had been told about this cemetery, and when I found it in the book I thought maybe you could use it too. I'll list a couple of other small cemeteries I found in the record book as well. There is a record book for each local township. They list many of the cemeteries in each township and the burials in each. Adams Cemetery was there as well. I called the county looking for cemetery records, and they refered me to these records. CADWELL CEMETERY Union Twp. - Porter Co.
