Applied on 23 Apr. 1835 in Putnam Co., IN, "aged 79 years on the 28th day of August last past," for a pension based on service during the Revolutionary War. John Mercer, James McAchran and Isaac Allspaugh appear to have attested to Denny's application (the rest of the sentence is missing). Denny was born in PA. He served in "a company of riflemen volunteers, called minute men . . . in the Virginia militia in Frederick county in the State of Virginia, where he then resided; this applicant, on the 6th of March in the year 1777 . . . entered upon active service . . . in a campaign against the Indians: Peter Babb being the captain; Aaron Mercer (or Messer) the first lieutenant and William Denny (a brother of the applicant) the second lieutenant . . . . " He served mostly between Fort Pitt and Wheeling for the protection of the frontier, and his company had frequent skirmishes with the Indians. He was discharged in Winchester, VA, but made a second tour with the same company, he being the second lieutenant and his brother William the first. During the second tour the company saw no fighting or skirmishing. During his third tour with the company, in late August 1777 they marched to and were at the battles of Brandywine and Germantown, PA. They returned to Winchester, but were sent out in 1778 to New Jersey, near the battle of Monmouth. In 1781 he served as second lieutenant in Captain Aaron Mercer's Company, guarding the prisoners taken at the surrender of Cornwallis. In 1789 Samuel Denny moved to present-day Mercer Co., KY, and in 1826 to Putnam Co., IN. He was granted a pension.
